Weekly Fun In The World's Borough
APRIL 2
It starts whenever you want. It’s as fancy and/or boozy as you want. And it’s Instagrammable. Brunch is alive and well in Queens, especially now that that it’s getting warm and restaurants can operate at 50 percent capacity. Here's a guide to some wonderful restaurants that serve such wonders as Chipotle Egg Benedict, Shrimp Grits, and Duck Confit Waffles.
Here’s more proof that Queens is out of the world! Rego Park-bred Vishnu Sridhar will discuss his experiences as part of the NASA team that recently realized a successful rover landing on Mars during a special Queens Historical Society stream on April 3 at 2:30 pm. He’ll also talk about his beloved borough and answer questions.
The Garage Art Center is a new Bayside gallery that presents high-quality shows, lectures, panel discussions, and workshops. (Yes, it's adjacent to a private home in a residential block.) The unsung gem will display Lineaments, an exhibition of drawings, weavings, and sculptural reliefs by Brooklyn-based Margie Neuhaus, from April 2 to April 25.
Grammy-winning saxophonist Michael Thomas holds degrees from The Julliard School, New England Conservatory, and University of Miami. The Jazz specialist has performed around the world and contributed to more than 30 distinct recordings. Watch him make sweet music with his quartet on April 2 as part of an ongoing live jam organized by Culture Lab LIC.
An NYC landmark re-opens after a COVID-induced break on April 6 (although visits are by appointment only for now). Built in 1661, Flushing's Bowne House is the borough’s oldest remaining domicile. Its architecture combines Dutch and English styles with a pitched roof and three dormers. The private collection includes roughly 5,000 objects.
Flushing Town Hall is playing your song! Many songs, actually. Researcher and educator Ben Young will lead Jazz 101 from April 6 to May 25. To unfold via eight weekly, two-hour sessions, the course is designed for all experience levels. Participants will listen to classic recordings and look at the genre within the context of United States history.
#MyQueensCart: Think Globally, Shop Locally
One is a Mexican bakery in Corona. Another is a Richmond Hill diner with Caribbean accents. The third makes Vietnamese cuisine at the E-Space. All are simply divine.
Use the hashtag #MyQueensCart on social media to encourage others to support local businesses and energize the economy!

Joey D is Instagrammable, too! Queens Tourism Council Official Foodie Joe DiStefano celebrates Opening Day with a slice at Philomena’s. The Sunnyside pizzeria has an Amazin' new item that honors Francisco Lindor, the smooth-fielding shortstop for the New York Mets. The pie is baked with red onions, capers, Kalamata olives, mushrooms, tomato sauce, and garlic. Then for each order, a staffer reheats the slice and tops it off with fiore di latte mozzarella, Calabrian chilies, basil, and parmigiano. The result is a grand slam of savory, salty, sweet, spicy, and creamy, according to our main scout.
