Oil Heat Cares Extends Aid to Flood-Affected Farmer

Cromwell Energy employees along with students from Entech Technical Training School in Cromwell, CT joined forces to install a new heating system for the Gilbert family of Rocky Hill, CT.

This family, in its fifth generation of managing the Gilbert Family farm, faced economic devastation because of repeated flooding that destroyed their crops for the third time in 11 years. Adding to their challenges was a leaking oil tank and a failing boiler.

Hearing of the family’s serious troubles, Lou Spada and Rich Drapeau of Cromwell Energy stepped in, reaching out to Oil Heat Cares (OHC).

Upon strong approval of the application, manufacturers generously donated equipment, including Buderus boilers, Roth tanks, Heat-Flo Indirect water heaters, Carlin-Hydrolevel and Caleffi controls.

Addressing another issue, Justin Romano and his team tackled the inadequate chimney of the farmhouse, installing a new liner system.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the OHC team – Cromwell Energy, Guaranteed Chimney Services and Entech Technical Training – as well as the generous donations received, the Gilbert family members can now rest assured that they will be able to heat their homestead this winter safely and efficiently.

Chapter News

Westchester Chapter

The Westchester Chapter held its November monthly meeting with Mark Stellmach of Fuel Management Solutions. He covered fuel refining and the quality provided in today’s heating products. He told us how, with proper treatment, today’s fuels can be stored for long periods of time with additives. His information came at an excellent time as the heating season is now in full force.

Our tech session was presented by Justin Romano, owner of Guaranteed Chimney. He noted that techs often concentrate on all the latest technology for boilers and equipment and often overlook the chimney or venting system. As the expert in the room, he educated us on some of the pitfalls that he has seen over the past years and cautioned against overlooking this very important part of the system. His Information was enlightening and gave our membership much to think about.

Long Island Chapter

The Long Island Chapter November meeting was the last one of the year. The meeting was well-attended with 35 members and guests on-hand for a live demonstration of oil spill remediation products by Kevin Overhuls of Oil Storage Solutions.

There was also a group of eight students from the Electrical Training Center in attendance, including one alum and an incoming student. Recruiting young people into our industry is vital and we plan on inviting students from local trade and vocational schools as often as possible.

Matt Brotz of Altherm and Steve Kay of Venco Sales were the raffle winners. Mike Dwyer of Hot Water Aplenty was the attendance winner who, by the way, also takes great pictures of our chapter events! In December we will get together for our holiday party. Please check the OESP website for details.

One group stayed in the training classroom where John Dunleavey spoke about Carlin’s B100 burner, Hydrolevel’s new HydroZone relay, the CAP system and new features for the 70200 primary control. The other group was taken on a factory tour. The groups switched before OESP attendees were treated to a buffet dinner and raffle prizes.
