Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Thanks to a Called to Renew grant, we were able to send a small contingent to the Jubilee of Youth taking place in Rome during this Jubilee Year of Hope. Five of our young adults are joined by Father Chris Malano, CSP, who is giving a talk at one of the many events.

The theme is ‘A step towards building peace in the world’, which will offer “an embrace from all young people worldwide” to those living in war zones.

About 146 countries will be represented throughout the week, with 78% coming from European countries. The other 22% will travel from across the globe, including some young people from countries facing conflict such as Iraq, South Sudan, and Lebanon.

Friday, August 1st will be dedicated to the sacrament of confession as the Circus Maximus. On the evening of Saturday, August 2nd, Pope Leo XIV will join the hundreds of thousands of young people for the prayer vigil, during which three people – one from Mexico, one from the United States, and one from Italy – will each ask the Pope a question. The Jubilee of Youth will close with a Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV this Sunday.

Last weekend, we participated in the Annual Mission Cooperative Appeal, which helps unite the Archdiocese of Los Angeles with the Universal Church and creates mission awareness. We heard from Bishop James Thoppil of the Diocese of Kohima located at the extreme northeast of India bordering Myanmar.

His appeal was for the construction of a shelter home for the children affected by HIV AIDS and Children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS. Bishop James noted that Nagaland is in the center of the "Golden Triangle," the nexus of drug trafficking. Drug addiction has left many people subject to HIV.

Called to Renew Church Renovation

The renovation project of the church is slated for completion August, God willing. Masses in the John Carroll Parish Center (JCPC), which is the original church, dedicated in 1932, are going well, cozy and intimate.

The roof repair and the restoration of the wood paneling are complete. Work on the electrical systems, lighting, and painting is underway.

One of the striking parts of the Church is the rock wall. Here's the architect's description of the wall and the altar area:

"The focal point of the entire church is the Sanctuary where daylight, silhouetting an arcade of 5 arches, streams dowm from a skylight over a wall composed of pebble mosaic textures plaster into which pebbles, stones and gold mosaic have been thrown at random. This utilization of natural light imposes an ethereal feeling of space. A white Arabian Travertine altar surmount a predella of the same material. The sanctuary floor is paved with Roman and Arabian Travertine with Rosso Verona inserts. A paneled and molded oak Reredos frames the main altar."
