What is CTE?
Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at Hinsdale Township District 86 provide instruction for careers in high-wage, high-skill, and in-demand occupations. District 86 CTE programs strengthen students' technical skills, articulate transitions to postsecondary or vocational programs, and close achievement gaps. CTE in District 86 represents the Business, Family & Consumer Sciences, and Technology Education Departments.
Regardless of whether students are headed for college or the workforce, this type of education will help students prepare for the future. In fact, college-bound students can get job experiences to help them define their career plans, identify an appropriate course of study, and help pay for tuition.
Business Department
District 86 offers a wide range of business courses with focuses on Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, and Accounting. Students who are contemplating a Business major in college should select one or more Business electives. Due to the difficulty of college level accounting, students are urged to take an Accounting course offered in District 86.
The Business Department offers Internship and Work Experience programs for students wishing to explore and actively contribute to the industrial, business, professional, and service sectors of the community. These Work Based Learning (WBL) programs are essential for students attaining lifelong critical thinking skills.
Technology Support Internship (TSI) students have just completed their Chromebook TechSpert Repair certification offered by Acer and are beginning their teardown and assembly projects of all of the devices in D86's fleet of Chromebooks. TSI Honors students are digging deeper into their pathway selection of the year with projects ranging from A+ certification, coding classes, building a robot and Google IT certification.
Family & Consumer Sciences Department
The Family & Consumer Sciences Department offers courses in the areas of Culinary Arts, Interior Design, Fashion, Teaching, and Family Living. The FACS Department strives to improve the lives of families, individuals and communities through advanced level learning opportunities for all students while fostering academic achievement, career exploration, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Our Invitation to Teaching course is a class where high school students with an interest in becoming educators is in full swing. This course offers a teaching internship, enabling students to work under the supervision of certified preschool, elementary and middle school staff in our feeder districts. Once placed, the students will spend as many as four days each week at their assigned schools to assist, observe and teach young children.
Technology Education
The District 86 Technology Education Department offers courses in Engineering & Design, Architecture, Graphic Communications, and Woodworking. Many of these courses are laboratory classes which provide skills, such as problem solving and group work, necessary to adult life. Students interested in engineering, architecture, design or construction management should enroll in these courses.
During the summer of 2022, the Technology Education department underwent significant renovations that included an all new Wood shop, Manufacturing shop, and CAD(Computer Aided Design) Labs. Students have been hard at work utilizing their new space and are creating hands-on projects as well as learning skills that will transfer well beyond their lives after high school.

Good News: English & LMC
LMC: Head librarian, Ms. Hernandez invites all staff and students to explore South’s beautiful LMC that includes a variety of helpful databases, fabulous book selection, and flexible study areas. Ms. Hernandez, along with Ms. Fisher and Ms. Rodriguez, are hard at work renewing and reorganizing the full collection into a “genrified” format. Instead of texts being organized alphabetically by author and traditional genre, this new organization sorts books under topics of interest. Each topic is then represented by a unique blend of both fiction and nonfiction texts. This organizational format encourages readers to explore topics more deeply while simultaneously assisting students who struggle to identify choice reading texts. Additionally, the LMC has implemented a quiet study, no-cell-phone policy that is providing a less distracting work environment to students as they engage in their studies.
