TCA Members’ Day outlines evolving procurement risks

The procurement landscape in Ontario and beyond continues to change, with more questions arising than ever before.

“We’re considering awarding contracts even before we launch a project and we know that it’s viable. There are some challenges with that because what happens if the project does not have a successful launch? Are we starting construction? Are we not starting construction? And when can we start construction and how long can those prices be held for?” said Jennifer Burstein, vice-president of construction with Collecdev, during a recent panel discussion.

City of Toronto announces the eight participants in its Deep Retrofit Challenge

The City of Toronto announced the eight buildings participating in the Deep Retrofit Challenge (DRC), a competition-style program with up to $5 million in investment from Natural Resources Canada provided through its Green Infrastructure – Energy Efficient Buildings Program. Through the DRC, grants of up to $500,000 will be awarded to each of the buildings, seven of which are privately-owned, to support deeper-than-planned energy retrofits. The grants will offset the incremental design and construction costs required to achieve maximum greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions.

York University expands school of continuing studies

After nine years of planning, the York University school of continuing education is uniting programs under one roof – a state-of-the-art building with a unique, twisted design. In 2018, Perkins&Wills was selected to design the building, led by architects Safdar Abidi and Andrew Frontini. The twisted architecture symbolizes the School’s twist on the traditional mission of continuing studies to solve Canada’s most pressing labour market gaps by connecting employers and a highly-skilled, ambitious talent pool through its innovative language and professional programs.

STO makes national trades harmonization a priority

The recent skilled trades summit held in Toronto by Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) was billed as Unleashing Ontario’s Potential, and it became clear during the proceedings the path to achieving that potential starts in Atlantic Canada.

New Brunswick and the other three Atlantic provinces are miles ahead of Ontario in the development of apprenticeship curriculum standards, training standards and program sequencing, according to STO CEO and registrar Melissa Young.

Enwave breaks ground on Toronto’s Green Heat low-carbon energy plant

Enwave Energy Corporation has broken ground on a new low-carbon heating facility that will enable a significant expansion of its downtown Toronto district energy program. The new Green Heat system at Enwave’s Pearl Street Energy Centre will recycle district waste heat to produce hot water via electrification, as opposed to typical natural gas applications, using dual-use heat pumps, electric feeds and generators. The project received extensive support through a grant from the federal government’s Low Carbon Economy Fund and a $600-million loan commitment from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) to boost the scale and build-out the project.
