October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month | | Why Early Detection is the Best Protection | |
Pink is October’s flagship color for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to learn more about this disease and how women can take steps to prioritize their breast health.
Breast cancer is common – in fact, it’s the second most common cancer in women in the U.S. About one in eight women will get the disease in their lifetime. Women age 50 and older are at higher risk, as well as those who have genetic mutations, dense breasts, or a family history of breast or ovarian cancers. However, beginning routine screening mammograms at age 40 can help detect cancer at an earlier stage when it’s easier to treat.
Women who may be at higher risk for breast cancer should visit with their primary care provider about early screening options. All women should do monthly self breast exams to become familiar with their breasts, making it easier to notice lumps, bumps, or changes if they occur.
If you’re due for a mammogram, you can schedule your screening mammogram using MyChart. Or, call Regional West’s Breast Health Center at 308-630-2700 and press option one to schedule.
