A Summer To Remember

Goodbye Summer!

Summer 2026 was one for the books at Antiochian Village! We kicked off the season with a sold out Family Camp, followed by three weeks of staff training that prepared our team for another incredible summer. From there, we welcomed campers for four completely sold out camp sessions, including a record number of Counselors-in-Training (CITs)!

We welcomed graduated seniors for Arch Week, giving them an opportunity to prepare for college while growing in faith and fellowship. We also welcomed back over 60 alumni for Homecoming Weekend to relive some of the memories that made camp so special!

This summer also brought new afternoon programs, countless activities, and plenty of hard work from our dedicated summer staff. We were blessed to welcome joint services with the Clergy Symposium during Session 3, as well as Metropolitan SABA and Metropolitan YACOUB of Buenos Aires and All Argentina.

We are especially grateful for our Bishop THOMAS and the priests who served our campers throughout the summer: Fr. John Dixon, Fr. James Purdie, Fr. Seraphim Solof, Fr. Michael Nasser, Fr. Joel Gillam, Fr. Raphael Daly, Fr. John Vazquez, and Fr. Nick Belcher.

Thank you to every camper, parent, priest, volunteer, and staff member who made this summer possible. We can't wait to welcome you back home soon!

AV's Most Unique Program

I think Adult Camp is our most unique program in the Archdiocese - a bold statement, I know. But think about it, is there another program in a camp setting that specifically creates space for adults 21+ to step away from the busyness and noise of everyday life, focus on Christ, and experience a spiritual reset?

Adult Camp 2026

September 4-7

This year, we have an especially exciting addition. Our guest speaker will be Kh. Melinda Johnson, CEO of Ancient Faith Ministries, who will be speaking on “Things We Learn the Hard Way.” A topic that is incredibly fitting for Adult Camp and will give us plenty to think about, discuss, and grow from throughout the weekend.

The Adult Camp schedule is intentionally flexible, especially in the afternoons, so you can choose whether you want to be adventurous or take some time to relax. There is so much fun waiting for you, REGISTER TODAY!

Special Summer Visitors

This summer we were blessed with to have many clergy visit us, specifically in Session 3 when the Clergy Symposium was at the Conference Center.

We welcomed Metropolitan SABA home along with Metropolitan YACOUB from Argentina and Dr. Tarek Mitri, the Deputy Prime Minister of Lebanon. They took a tour of Camp and enjoyed some Arabic coffee prepared by our program Director, Michael Salem.

AV Alumni Ordinations

Deacon Michael Ashanin

Earlier this month, our very own Village Alum, Michael Ashanin, was ordained a deacon by Bishop THOMAS at his home parish.

Michael and his wife Janine both served on Antiochian Village Staff.

Fr. Nick Nunu

We also welcomed back Fr. Nick Nunu, a Village Alum who was on staff just a few years ago.

He recently became ordained a priest and came to serve Vespers at St. Ignatius during Session 3 while attending the Clergy Symposium.

Fr. Christopher Abdelahad

In March of this year, Christopher Abdelahad was ordained into the priesthood by Metropolitan SABA.

Fr. Chris served on AV Staff and his wife Hannah served on Camp Saint Thekla staff.

Fr. Elias (Adam) Murphy

During Session 3 our campers and staff were blessed to witness the ordination of Fr. Elias during Divine Liturgy.

Fr. Elias is also an AV Staff Alum!

Axios to Deacon Michael Ashanin, Fr. Nick Nunu, Fr. Christopher Abdelahad, and Fr. Elias Murphy! May God grant them all many years and continue to help them in their parishes!

Meet Fr. John Vazquez

Fr. John Vazquez was ordained to the holy priesthood on October 23, 2022 at St. George Orthodox Church in Fishers, IN by Bishop Anthony Michaels. His undergraduate studies were at Kent State University where he studied history. He graduated from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in May 2023 and began serving as pastor of St. George Albany on June 1, 2023. Before being called to the priesthood Fr John played professional baseball for 4 years with the Boston Red Sox organization, was an assistant baseball coach at Wabash College in Indiana for 4 years and worked as a code consultant surveying hospitals for 5 years. Fr John is married to Kh. Hannah and together they have 5 children. Fr John enjoys sports (especially baseball and basketball) reading, hiking and being at the dinner table with his family. Fr John has been a session priest at AV for the last two years.

A Journey to the Priesthood—Fr John Vazquez

When I was young the only thing I wanted to be was a Major League Baseball Player. This goal was on my mind constantly. I squeezed a tennis ball in class, I did calf raises in church and I woke early to take swings. With that said, from a young age I knew that the Church was important largely based on how I saw that my parents lived. When I was around 8 or 9, I first began going to confession regularly and found it spiritually refreshing. I started with a personal rule of prayer when I was 12 and began reading the scriptures regularly when I was in high school. I got a scholarship to college to play baseball and when I went to college I went through a time where I did not attend church as much and I struggled spiritually. Part of this was because of a rigorous baseball schedule that included games on Sundays and part of it was because I was struggling with how important it is to attend church regularly (it is very important—Remember Fr Chris’s three favorite words, “GO TO CHURCH!”). My parents continued to encourage me to practice the faith. I could not have had better parents, and for this, I am extremely grateful.

After graduating from Kent State with a bachelors degree in History I was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in June of 2007. This was a dream come true for me. I played minor league baseball for 4 years. My experience with sports taught me a lot. I learned how to work with others. I learned how to discipline myself to do things that are hard. I learned about other cultures. I learned that failure is a part of life and that things do not always turn out how you hope or think they will.

In 2010 during the off-season for the minor leagues I had an experience while reading a book where I read the words from the gospel “‘if you would be perfect, go, sell all that you have and come follow me.’” I don’t know what else to say except for, at those words I knew that God was telling me that He wanted me to be a priest. I fell down on my knees and told God I wanted to do

whatever He asked. I wanted to make a move right then but it just was not the right time.

Several years later in 2018 we visited some friends that used to attend the church that I attended growing up, St Matthew in North Royalton, OH. While there, we were encouraged to look into pursuing seminary and the priesthood. This supportive encouragement from our friends reignited that desire in me to look into this path again. I asked my wife about it again and she was very

adamant that WE WOULD NOT BE DOING THIS! I told her that I was ok with that because, despite my experience in 2010 of hearing that “call” from the Lord, I knew that this was not something I could do of my own accord. I knew that someone else would need to ask or tell me to do it. I did ask her though if she had prayed about it and she said “no.” I told her that if she prayed about it and still thought we should not, I would be ok with that. She prayed about it and

a few days later she told me we should look into it and that led us to where we are now at St George in Albany, NY. I am thankful to God for all things.

As I have come through these first three years of my life as a parish priest I am humbled by God’s many blessings. It is such a joy and honor to stand at the Holy Altar and serve the divine services. I honestly did not think I would ever find something as fulfilling as playing ball but the priesthood far surpasses that life. Give God a chance to guide you and you might be surprised!

RELIVE AV MEMORIES!

Hey AV Alumni! Do you love flipping through our photo albums when you come to visit? Well our previous Director of Communications Constantine Kallaur has scanned all of our photos from our photo collection going all the way back to 1981! In an effort to preserve the history of The Antiochian Village, we are in the process of digitizing as much content as we have. Our Director of Operations, Nick Dujmovic, has collected camp videos going all the way back to the 1990s as well.
