For the first time, California's Climate Change Assessment, produced by the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation, includes a report on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Led by the Delta Stewardship Council in partnership with the Delta Protection Commission and Delta Conservancy, the report highlights the region’s unique characteristics, vulnerabilities, and needs, as well as the climate data, research, adaptation strategies, and investments that would strengthen its resilience.

A Note from the Council's Chair

“The Delta is important to all Californians,” says Council Chair Julie Lee. “Elevating a report that focuses solely on the Delta as part of the Fifth Climate Change Assessment underscores the growing awareness of the region’s statewide importance. Whether you work in policy, science, engineering, or another area of interest, this report has valuable information that can help guide your decisions. I encourage you to read and share it among your networks.”

Why This Work Matters

Climate change poses growing risks to California's water supply, ecosystems, wildlife, communities, economy, and more. In the Delta specifically, climate hazards put critical flood protection infrastructure at risk, jeopardize water quality, and endanger species. The region urgently needs science-based adaptation strategies to address these vulnerabilities, among others.

Since 2018, the Council has led a two-part climate initiative called “Delta Adapts,” which synthesizes vulnerabilities and sets forth a comprehensive, regional approach

to climate resiliency that cuts across regional boundaries and urges collaboration across state, local, and regional levels.

About the Council

The Council works to advance California’s coequal goals for the Delta – a reliable water supply and a resilient ecosystem – in a manner that protects and enhances the Delta's unique characteristics as an evolving place where people live, work, and recreate.

We carry out this mission by implementing the Delta Plan, an enforceable long-term sustainable management plan, to ensure coordinated action in the region at the federal, state, and local levels.
