I would like to thank all that came out last month for the Earth Day Clean-Up around downtown! We had volunteers show up throughout the day and did a wonderful job picking up large amounts of trash in the area. While it can be disheartening seeing the status of our streets, it is heartwarming to see the care and dedication of people that work and live in this city to make downtown a welcoming place to be. A special thank you goes out to State Senator Michael Brady, Jeffrey Thompson - Ward 5 Brockton City Councilor, Elvera's Cafe, Clean City Crew - Alex Hoxie, Brockton Garden Club, Brockton Redevelopment Authority, and Old Colony Planning Council staff for being part of the team.
During the months of May and June you will see a larger push to have property owners sign onto the Business Improvement District (BID). This initiative will help capitalize on the benefits of working together to bring people to the downtown with a focus on clean and safe. The BID is a great opportunity to provide a voice for Downtown property owners and allow stakeholders to have more of a say on the direction and development of Downtown. The May 22nd meeting will focus primarily on the initiative as you'll hear from local stakeholders about why they believe in the BID. This is a great opportunity to learn more, especially if you are still deciding about signing.
We really need you to join as a member. Recent members are Celia Insurance, District Attorney Timothy Cruz Office, and Dr. Ellie Paris Social Bookstore & Ice Cream Cafe. These minimal fees help support the great work the DBA does as a volunteer based organization. The membership dues go directly to advocating for the downtown, marketing your businesses, finding resources, and more. You can learn more about becoming a member on our website, dbabrockton.org/get-involved.
As you will see, I have reached out to Jazmine Bradsher, Director of Social Services, and will have a section of this newsletter dedicated to the work she is doing with the other organizations to address the needs of the unhoused in downtown.
