Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

The Storm Continues

1730 Thursday, August 10, 2023

It is not a fit night out for man nor beast! Nonetheless, here we are, two men and two moose.

A few minutes ago, I popped up on deck briefly and suddenly noticed the mother moose and calf (photo above) in the grassy estuary astern of where we are anchored. They did not appear to particularly mind the weather, which has continued in beastly fashion all day.

It is blowing a steady 35 to 40 outside of our anchorage. Even here, anchored in the small pool at the head of Maiden Arm, Tazzarin sways and tugs on her anchor chain, sometimes even lurching with a sudden heel to one side or the other. The short snubbed line on the anchor rode has been moaning and creaking under the strain. Heavy mists and rain have been blowing sideways all day. The wind whistles through the rigging, changing tone with the gusts. Seas outside are reported at 10 to 13 feet. Thankfully, aside from tiny whitecaps in our pool, the water is smooth. We are safe and cozy aboard Tazzarin.

JJ, who is the far better cook, made chili dogs for lunch and is currently rummaging in the galley concocting something warm and tasty for dinner.

We still have 120 miles as the crow flies to Lewisporte, Newfoundland where we are hoping to be in three more days for a planned crew change. It is going to mean a few long days once we get going tomorrow morning. The wind is supposed to go light in the morning; but, a nasty sea state of waves will be left behind by the storm; that may slow us tomorrow. We would like to make 50 miles tomorrow. We won't really know if we can do that until we get out into the sea in the morning.

I am likely to sleep lightly tonight as I listen or check to see that our anchor is not dragging. However, the anchor has held perfectly all day. We have 150 feet of chain out and are anchored in about 18 feet of water.

Let's see what tomorrow brings...
