Community Partner Spotlight – Grinnell Fire & EMS

The Grinnell Fire Department and EMS serve a vital role in protecting the health and safety of Grinnell and surrounding communities. From emergency response and public education to disaster preparedness and community outreach, the department works every day to help ensure residents are prepared when emergencies arise.

This summer, Grinnell College is partnering with Grinnell Fire & EMS through a Grinnell Summer of Service volunteer position (Service Leadership Work-Study). Student Morgan Trujillo ’27 is volunteering alongside Grinnell and regional emergency response organizations to explore how emergency services, public health, rural infrastructure, and community preparedness intersect to support community safety and well-being. As part of the experience, Morgan is also helping design a pipeline program that introduces Grinnell students to careers in emergency medical services, creating new opportunities for students to serve their communities while exploring future career paths.

This partnership reflects Grinnell College's commitment to experiential learning and civic engagement while supporting organizations that strengthen the well-being of the region.

Students Speak

"One thing that struck me is how much members of the Grinnell Fire Department and Police Department truly care about their community. You can see it in the first name basis they have while interacting with community members and the genuine connections made that stretch across our town. There is also such a strong sense of community within the departments, which can be seen during the coffee and lunch breaks spent at the kitchen table enjoying a meal together while talking about nothing and everything."

— Morgan Trujillo ’27, Grinnell Fire & EMS Summer of Service, Service Leadership Work-Study student

Grinnell College Golf Course Simulator Ribbon Cutting

A 126-year-old clubhouse may seem like an unlikely home for cutting-edge technology, but Chamber Ambassadors recently learned how the new 1899 Lounge at the Grinnell College Golf

Course is helping modernize a game that has been part of Grinnell since 1899. General Manager Shane Hart shared how the state-of-the-art golf simulator provides a year-round opportunity for golfers to practice while offering a welcoming, low-pressure environment for beginners to try the sport. Supported through stewardship funds and additional investment from Grinnell College, the space has transformed an underutilized area into a year-round destination used by golfers of all skill levels.
