New Report from Restore America’s Estuaries: JOBS AND DOLLARS: Big Returns from Coastal Habitat Restoration

This report highlights how coastal habitat restoration fuels the US economy. Specifically, the report details how coastal habitat restoration creates jobs, saves money through storm damage mitigation, and brings in revenue through outdoor recreation opportunities. The report includes case studies, statistics, and other data that illustrates the economic benefits of coastal habitats.

Study from the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience (CCCR):  Hybrid coral reef restoration can be a cost-effective nature-based solution to provide protection to vulnerable coastal populations | Science Advances

This study demonstrates how coral reef restoration in Florida and Puerto Rico has the potential to save thousands of lives and millions of dollars. Children, the elderly, minorities, and people living below the poverty line would benefit the most from coral reef restoration in these regions. The study shows that restoring 20% of the region’s reefs would provide economic benefits outweighing the costs of restoration.

Collaboration Corner & Partner Announcements

SCDRP is an incubator network housed under the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Association (SECOORA). SECOORA is one of eleven Regional Associations in NOAA's Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). Federal funding cuts recently proposed by the Executive Branch would eliminate next year's budget for IOOS. The work of SCDRP is financially sustained by SECOORA with federal funds through the IOOS Program; eliminating the IOOS program will disable SECOORA's ability to fund SCDRP.

Learn more about the proposed cuts and you can help here.

Do you have an announcement, question, or a request for information, resources, or connections that you’d like to send out to SCDRP’s wide network of disaster resiliency and climate professionals? Email us at scdrp@secoora.org with your request and contact information, and it may be featured in our next newsletter!

Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program | The Spencer Foundation

In the face of recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, including large-scale terminations of National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant awards, we have developed a rapid response bridge grant opportunity for impacted scholars. This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF. While it is impossible for private philanthropy to close the gap left by federal funders, we can provide modest grants to mitigate some of the impact on scholars, projects, and project teams. These $25,000 grants are for activities to address immediate needs following grant cancellations, including completing a wave of data collection, analyzing already collected data or writing, thoughtful project closure with community partners, or preparing grant proposals to continue the research. To be eligible for these grants, scholars must: (1) be working on research on STEM and education (including AI and CS, graduate education and MSIs, and scholarship that aims to reduce inequality), and (2) have had a recently terminated or cancelled grant from NSF. Where possible, we will prioritize early-career scholars.

Full Proposal Deadline: May 30 and June 13, 2025

Open Ocean Research Grants Program

This research grant program aims to enhance ocean governance by publicly sharing data on human activity at sea to grow our community of practice and expand and improve Global Fishing Watch datasets. The Open Ocean Research Grant Program seeks to strengthen this network of research partners and maximize the impact of these datasets by inviting global researchers to improve core technologies and apply them to ocean governance research.

The Open Ocean Research Grants Program offers up to $10,000 for individuals, including graduate students and researchers establishing themselves in their fields, ideally collaborating with civil society and/or government agencies. Institutions like small laboratories and organizations with teams of two to five people with a clearly identified team leader can receive up to $20,000 for projects using Global Fishing Watch data.

Closing June 17, 2025

Applications now open for the The Continuum Ocean Enterprise Studio and Incubator (Seaworthy Collective)

This program offers U.S.-based BlueTech startups tailored support to develop ocean data solutions, backed by NOAA scholarships.

This year, the Studio and Incubator will exclusively support US-based startups developing ocean data technologies and services, in alignment with the priorities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean Enterprise Initiative.

This 3-month program activates our community to contribute to and grow scalable companies and impact. We build cohorts of two types of participants:

  • Current founders growing their existing early-stage startups
  • Aspiring founders co-creating a new startup with Seaworthy.

We aim to support 5 to 7 existing early-stage startups and co-create 1 new startup for each cohort. NOAA supported scholarships (a $25,000 value) enable NO COST or equity requirements for each participant.
