Note from Ellen
Dear Friends,
Our path through the Old Testament winds its way to Moses and the parting of the Red Sea this week. After several generations of Joseph’s family make their home in Egypt, we are told that a king who does not remember Joseph sits on the throne. Threatened by the increasing numbers of Hebrews in his midst, the king chooses to enslave them. For several generations, the Hebrews suffer under Egyptian rule before God chooses Moses to lead them to freedom. One challenge is that the road to freedom places the people between pharaoh’s armies and the Red Sea. What does it mean for the people to trust God enough to move forward then? What does it mean for us now?
I hope to see you on Sunday when we will wonder about this question and celebrate the sacrament of communion as we celebrate World Communion with our neighbors around the world.
Grace and peace,
Ellen

Mind the Gap: Midweek Bible Study with FPC and Sardis Presbyterian Church
This fall, as the Narrative Lectionary takes us through the Old Testament by a different path than last fall, our friends at Sardis Presbyterian Church have invited us to join them for a study of the texts that fall between the Sunday readings.
Led primarily by the Rev. Dr. Joe B. Martin and occasionally by Renda Brinson, Casey Aldridge, and Jodi Martin, the study will consider stories and events that took place between the Sunday readings. The group meets in person and on Zoom on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings.
For more information and/or the Zoom link, contact Ellen, Casey, or Jodi.

Blessing of the Animals
This Sunday, October 4, at 3:00 PM, we will gather on the Fellowship House lawn for the Blessing of the Animals service.
Please make sure your pet is on a leash.
If your pet/pets are unable to attend, a picture is great.
We will be collecting donations for the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Concord/Greater Cabarrus. The staff and volunteers of these organizations work very hard to provide a safe, comfortable, and loving environment for these animals. Please bring your donations, (see list below) and they will be delivered to the shelter.
Invite your friends and neighbors as we gather to worship God and to give thanks for, celebrate, and care for all of God's creatures great and small. Join us for human snacks and pet treats!
See you there!

Coltrane-Webb Coat Drive
The Deacons’ Mission Committee is excited to partner with Coltrane-Webb STEM Elementary School this year. We’re beginning our work together with an October coat drive!
The school has identified a need for extra coats that can be given to students when colder weather arrives. We can help make sure every child has something warm to wear this winter.
Throughout October, we’re collecting new children’s coats with the tags still attached.
Donation boxes will be located:
In the narthex
In the Fellowship House
Every coat will go directly to a child who needs it. Thank you for helping us keep Coltrane-Webb’s students warm!

September Lunch Bunch
Fourteen members and guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and a program by Kathy Lista, director and founder of the Open Door House. This groundbreaking program provides shelter and guidance for young people 18 to 21 years old who have aged out of foster care but still need support and help to make a better future for themselves. They are changing the lives of many forgotten young people who didn't get a fair start in life and helping them get education, job training, and life skills before facing the world alone. You can learn more about this unique program right here in Cabarrus County at www.theopendoorhouse.org
