Billy's Big Personality on Display

Meet Billy… and that big energy he sometimes brings with him.

If you’ve ever seen a chimpanzee like Billy stand tall, swagger a bit, stomp, vocalize, or make himself look extra large, you’ve witnessed what’s known as a display. And if his hair appeared to stand on end, that’s called piloerection, often shortened to “pilo.”

In the wild, male chimpanzees use displays and piloerection as part of their complex social system. These behaviors help establish and maintain dominance, communicate status, and sometimes even prevent physical conflict. By putting on an impressive show, appearing bigger, louder, and stronger, a male can send a clear message without needing to fight.

Here at the sanctuary, our males continue to express these natural behaviors, though the setting may be a bit different. When Billy or one of the other boys notices new faces on the grounds, especially during tour visits, you might see a display. It’s often a blend of curiosity and communication: “Hey! Who’s that? And just so you know, I’m big, tough, and in charge around here.”

While it may look intense at first glance, these moments are a normal and healthy expression of who they are. Displays and piloerection are simply part of chimpanzees being chimpanzees... and for Billy, it’s sometimes his way of making a memorable first impression.

You can adopt Billy today and be part of his ongoing care, or keep an eye out for our upcoming Adopt-a-Palooza in July—a wonderful opportunity to get to know Billy and many of the other remarkable residents in a special way.

Celebrating the Heart of Our Sanctuary: Our Volunteers

Volunteer Appreciation Week - April 19th–26th

Jam

Each day at the Center for Great Apes begins with a shared purpose: to provide lifelong care, comfort, and dignity to the remarkable orangutans and chimpanzees who call the sanctuary home. During Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 19–26, we take a special moment to recognize the dedicated individuals who help make that work possible.

Our volunteers are truly vital to the functions of the sanctuary. They donate their time, energy, and compassion in ways that touch every corner of our work. From preparing fresh meals and helping maintain habitats to assisting with events, greeting members, and supporting behind-the-scenes projects, their contributions are felt each and every day. Their willingness to step in where needed allows our staff to focus more deeply on the specialized care our residents require.

To celebrate this extraordinary group, one of our thoughtful CGA donors is sponsoring and helping us host a special Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at the start of the week. It is a wonderful way to gather, reflect, and express our heartfelt gratitude for all the volunteers do throughout the year. Their dedication does not go unnoticed, and this time together allows us to recognize the many ways they strengthen our mission.

For those who have considered getting involved, there has never been a better time. Volunteering at the Center for Great Apes offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the care of these incredible animals while becoming part of a compassionate and committed community.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference, we invite you to join us as a Center for Great Apes volunteer. Please reach out to learn more about upcoming volunteer opportunities and orientations. Your time and care can help ensure that every resident continues to receive the life they deserve.

Every Day is Earth Day at the Sanctuary

Jethro

With Earth Day coming up on April 22, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on our connection to the natural world—and the many ways we can care for it.

There is something special about mornings at the sanctuary. The sun rises over the trees, the air is fresh, and the day begins with the quiet sounds of nature and the gentle routines of care.

For the orangutans and chimpanzees who call the Center for Great Apes home, this setting is more than beautiful... it’s essential. It’s a place where they can climb, explore, build nests, and simply be apes.

Earth Day invites us to reflect on how we care for our planet, and here at the sanctuary, that care is part of everyday life. The apes enjoy fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens, along with forage treats scattered throughout their habitats to encourage natural behaviors like searching and discovering food.

High above the ground, aerial trailways wind through the trees, giving the apes space to travel and choose where they want to spend their time. Enrichment often comes from simple, natural materials such as pinecones, branches, and leaves, reminding us that caring for animals and caring for the Earth go hand in hand.

While our mission focuses on providing lifelong sanctuary, we see every day how connected we all are to the natural world. When you support the sanctuary, you help maintain a place filled with trees, fresh air, and space for the apes to thrive.

So this Earth Day, we invite you to take a moment. Step outside. Listen. Appreciate the small, simple things nature provides.

Because here at the sanctuary, every day is Earth Day—and every day is an opportunity to care a little more, give a little more, and protect what matters most.
