Meet May featured artist: Bonnie Iannotta
Bonnie is a mixed media artist who focuses on non-tradition landscapes. In her words:
"Nature is the catalyst for my painting. New England’s forest floors, vernal pools, and glacial moraine fascinate the child in me. My painting process is influenced by the glacial history etched into the boulders, and the patina of moss and lichen on rock. As I walk I sketch, take photographs, and collect rocks, moss, or leaves. Back in the studio these trigger memory and are references for painting.
The paintings begin with texture made with wood graining tools, collage, or mono-prints. Dragged striations in paint become grain in stone or blades of grass. After drying, the panel is laid horizontally and a colored glaze is poured over the painting which flows over the surface topography. The process is repeated, with some areas later being sanded and scrapped, eroding the surface to reveal under-layers. In this way I use the qualities of the media as equivalents for natural processes.
As each layer is added and abraded, the painting evolves. Allowing random effects keeps the painting process reactive. Quite often I set out with one idea in mind and end up somewhere unexpected."
Bonnie currently has work in the MA WCA exhibition The Mother Cycle, part of The 6000 Circle Project. On view at the Gale Free Library in Holden through May.
