U.S. Senate Confirms Dr. Oz to Lead Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Party-line vote places Oz at the helm of federal agency responsible for administering health care programs relied on by 1 in 4 Americans

April 3, 2025

By: Jennifer Shutt, Idaho Capital Sun

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed former television personality and onetime Pennsylvania political candidate Mehmet Oz as director of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The 53-45 party-line vote places Oz at the helm of the federal agency responsible for administering health care programs relied on by 1 in 4 Americans, including children, seniors and lower-income people.

His confirmation comes as Republicans in Congress look to Medicaid, a state-federal partnership that covers medical expenses for some low-income and older Americans, as a source for hundreds of billions in spending cuts to help pay for extending the 2017 GOP tax law. READ MORE

AMA Scope of Practice Partnership Grant Boosts IMA and IPA Advocacy Efforts

The Idaho Medical Association and Idaho Psychiatric Association (IPA) thank the AMA Scope of Practice Partnership (SOPP) for awarding grant funding to assist in advocacy efforts to protect Idahoans from erosion of quality and training standards in healthcare. The grant made it possible to contract an additional lobbyist to bolster the IMA lobby team's opposition to SB 1088, a bill which would have significantly lowered education and supervision standards for psychologist prescribing.

IMA recognizes that psychologists are well-trained behavioral experts, and vital and respected members of the healthcare team. However, given that psychotropic medications affect the entire body and eighteen of the 30 most prescribed psychotropic medications carry FDA "black box" warnings, patient safety concerns prompted IMA to oppose the bill.

Thanks to the SOPP grant, IMA's lobbying team was able to effectively communicate the potential unintended consequences of the bill to legislators; ultimately the bill was held in the House Health & Welfare Committee without a hearing.

Idaho's physician workforce shortage makes our state particularly vulnerable to attempts to expand scope of practice for non-physicians in the name of enhanced access to care. IMA supports consideration of thoughtful approaches to such expansion where necessary, but never at the expense of patient safety. We thank the AMA for its partnership in preserving quality care for Idahoans.

TRICARE PCM Referral Waiver Extended

The Defense Health Agency has waived the requirement to obtain approval for referrals to outpatient specialty care for TRICARE Prime enrollees in the West Region. This process will be in place through April 30 and is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025. This waiver allows all TRICARE Prime patients who are referred for outpatient specialty care by their primary care manager to proceed without requiring TriWest approval. TriWest will pay claims associated with this care during this waiver period. Referrals and authorizations for service issued to TRICARE Prime beneficiaries between January 1, 2025 and April 30, 2025, are valid for services rendered through June 30, 2025. After that, normal referral and authorization will resume. Exceptions for this waiver include:

  • Inpatient care
  • Applied behavior analysis (ABA)/Autism Care Demonstration (ACD) services
  • Laboratory developed test (LDT)
  • Extended Care Health Option (ECHO) services and other services that require pre-authorization.

TriWest took over the TRICARE contract in 26 western states on January 1, 2025. Since that time, TriWest has processed and paid approximately 4.1 million provider claims, totaling more than $432 million paid out to providers. TriWest President and CEO thanks TRICARE providers for their partnership during this transition and their commitment to providing excellent care for those who have served.
