Dear FAEA Family,
As the summer days begin to wind down, it’s time to look ahead to the exciting opportunities of a brand-new school year. I hope your summer has been filled with relaxation, inspiration, and maybe even a little creative rejuvenation. Now, let’s channel that “summer fresh” energy into planning for an incredible year in art education!
One of the most impactful ways to start the year strong is by jumpstarting your lesson planning. Take a moment to reflect on the foundation you’ve built and consider how you can expand on your students’ knowledge in meaningful ways. Aligning your lessons with state standards is a key step—yes, even if you “know” you’re already doing it. Triple-checking that alignment ensures your curriculum is rock-solid and ready to meet the needs of all your learners.
Representation is another critical aspect of our work as art educators. Who are the artists that speak to you? Who are the makers that you share with your students, and why? Take a moment to reflect on the voices you bring into your classroom. The power of seeing oneself in the art and artists explored in class cannot be overstated. When we diversify the narratives we share, we create opportunities for students to see themselves in new and meaningful ways.
This month, I encourage you to share your favorite artists and why they resonate with you. By growing our collective knowledge, we open the door to reaching students we may not have connected with before. Maybe someone you share will spark something in another educator, who will then pass that spark along to their students. What we do, we do better together.
As you dive into planning and preparing, remember that you’re not alone. The FAEA community is here to support you every step of the way. Whether it’s through shared lesson plans, inspiring artists, or words of encouragement, we are stronger when we work together.
Let’s make this school year one filled with creativity, connection, and growth. Thank you for your passion, dedication, and commitment to advancing art education. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and for the arts.
Together, we are stronger!
Warm regards,
Latonya Hicks
