Celebrating Young Carers on March 16!
There are over 500,000 young caregivers in Ontario that provide physical and emotional support to a parent, sibling, relative, friend or neighbour across the province.

Young caregivers are an often hidden and at-risk group that face unique challenges in juggling caregiving with work, school or both, which can lead to long term impacts on their development. In order to thrive, young caregivers need to be supported and recognized by their peers, teachers, family and health care providers.

Find out more about some of the resources OCO offers to young caregivers:

Learning more about young caregivers and what they face is an important part of recognizing their role and supporting them in their growth and development.

Meet Maria: A Story of Compromise & Communication
Some days it’s hard to keep in mind, but our family has learned a lot about effective caregiving during the past 18 months.

For my sister and me, our mother’s primary caregivers, it has meant prioritizing clear, supportive communication among family members, especially our siblings, and building and sustaining a caregiving team. Both of us manage our own households, my sister also works full-time, and I commute for two hours in heavy traffic most days. Professional home care and family help to substitute for or supplement us and are is essential to avoid burnout. In order to keep exhaustion from overwhelming us, we have reached out to the grandchildren – two of them have been able to join the caregiving team – and PSWs to lighten our load.

We have strategically arranged the help so that we can have a little time off during each week to spend with our own families and try to maintain our other interests and activities.
Upcoming OCO Webinars
March 10: Caregiving and Chronic Liver Disease: Challenges, Insights and Support

As a caregiver of someone living with a chronic illness, such as chronic liver disease, you may share many of the same emotions as your care recipient, such as fear, isolation, and anger. Providing care over a long period of time can also lead to caregiver burnout which is why it is important to care for yourself.

In collaboration with the Canadian Liver Foundation, the OCO will be presenting this special webinar on caregiving & chronic illness. We invite you to join our expert speakers, Dr. Angela Cheung and caregiver Evelyne Chenard, as they discuss the challenges of chronic disease, specifically chronic liver disease. You will gain insights into the patient and caregiver journey, and learn about the support services available.

*This presentation will be in English and available as a recording after the event.
March 23: The Role of Pharmacies & Pharmacists in Supporting Caregivers in the Community

Pharmacists and pharmacies play an integral role in their community, providing various supports and resources to the people throughout their healthcare journey. In collaboration with the Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada, and the Ontario Pharmacists Association, we will be hosting a Q&A panel with pharmacists and caregivers.

Pharmacists, Shelita Dattani and Angeline Ng, will talk about the valuable role of pharmacies and pharmacists in providing care and supportive resources to both patients and caregivers in the community and different healthcare settings such as primary care and long-term care. Caregivers, Louise Sullivan and Rani Sinanan, will speak to how building a relationship with their local pharmacists has benefited them in their caregiving role and their own self-care.

*This presentation will be in English and available as a recording after the event.
