Dear Thunderbolt Families,

Happy New Year! I trust that each of you enjoyed a relaxing and safe Holiday Break.

As we embark on the second semester, I want to provide some important reminders for everyone. Firstly, please note that first-semester grades are now finalized. For those who may have missed their finals, the first 10 school days of the semester are designated for make-up exams. Following this timeframe, we will proceed with grade changes once all finals have been completed. If you are aware of any final exams that need to be made up, kindly reach out to the respective teachers or contact Mrs. Jennifer Cupell at 520-879-3820 or cupellj@vailschooldistrict.org.

Attendance - Loss of Graduation Credit

It is crucial to be mindful of attendance, as students with nine non-school-related absences in any one course per semester will forfeit credit in that class. Recognizing that there may be extenuating circumstances leading to excessive absences, appeals for credit loss can be directed to Mr. Kyle Howell at howellk@vailschooldistrict.org. Please keep track of your child's absences for the second semester and inform us of any situations we should be aware of regarding attendance.

This month, our campus will be abuzz with various activities. Towards the end of the month, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will engage in pre-registration for classes for the 2024/2025 school year.

On January 24th, we will host a Career & Technical Education and Fine Arts Crawl, providing students with the opportunity to explore all the offerings on campus. This event is instrumental in helping students make informed decisions about their class selections for the upcoming academic year.

Additionally, on January 18th, we will hold an open house for all 8th graders interested in attending Mica Mountain. This event is an integral part of the high school choice process, allowing 8th graders to explore and understand all that Mica Mountain has to offer.

Wishing you a fantastic start to 2024 and the second semester.

We are Mountain Strong!!!

Sincerely.

Nemer Hassey

COUNSELOR CORNER

Happy New Year from the Counseling Center!

Class of 2024:

The first 4-year graduating class of Mica Mountain High School will be held in our football stadium on May 23, 2024. If purchased by the November deadline, caps and gowns arrived in December, and announcements should arrive soon. The announcements will be delivered to campus, and we will inform you when those dates will be. If a student did not get their gown, they can pick it up in Mr. Tritz’s office, Room 152, in the Student Union.

To-do list:

• Fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible. Every year money is not disbursed due to families thinking they don’t qualify. The FAFSA underwent a major change this year, and getting the website up and running has been slow. Be patient and keep trying, but do not give up. Remember, you MUST have an FSA ID before you can e-sign your FAFSA. Get that FSA ID now.

• Stay focused. This semester will go by quickly, and senioritis will kick in for many. We want no empty seats at our ceremony, so check PowerSchool regularly and keep in contact with teachers so there will be no surprises in May.

• The Senior Exit Project will be completed by Spring Break. Be sure all components are done by the due dates listed on the website.

Classes of 2025, 2026, and 2027:

Registration for the 2024-25 school year is happening at the beginning of next month for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. It is a two-day process for each grade level. On the first day, we review each student's transcript and do credit checks to ensure every student knows if they are on track to graduate or if they need to retake the credits necessary to graduate. We then discuss the courses they have available to choose from to register for classes. On the second day, the students will log on to PowerSchool and select requests for the classes they hope to get for the following school year. Below is the tentative schedule for pre-registration.

Day 1: January 24

The modified bell schedule will be shared later*

o 9:10 AM in the Peak – 10th grade

Thunderbolt Advanced Scholar Academy

Start Your Semester Off S.M.A.R.T

One of the best ways to make your goal-setting more effective is by creating S.M.A.R.T. goals. SMART is an acronym that means your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. These criteria can be used to guide your goal setting.

  • Specific: Adding specificity to your goal makes it easier to achieve. Detail what you want to accomplish, when you would like to accomplish it, and what actions you will need to take to meet the goal.
  • Measurable: Your goal should be something that is able to be tracked. If your goal is too vague, it can be difficult to assess how close you are to achieving it.
  • Attainable: College students have a lot on their plate. Make sure your goal is something you can realistically accomplish within the given time frame.
  • Relevant: SMART goals for students should relate back to academic or professional growth. When creating a new goal, ask yourself how this accomplishment could benefit your academic performance or set you up for success in your desired career.
  • Time-bound: It’s easier to stick with a goal when it has a specific deadline associated with it. Determine when you would like to meet your goal by, and consider setting target dates for each step involved in meeting the goal.

If you follow the SMART goal approach you can start the second semester strong and also establish habits for continued academic achievement and success!

Please see the flyer below for more information and the table below for the applicable signup dates and number of slots that remain for each session!

On January 24th, we have scheduled a score interpretation session for juniors who took the ASVAB last semester. This offers a personalized discussion with military personnel.
