EB Gymnastics Team Will Be Going To The New Englands
For the First Time in Program History
At the end of February, the Brockton/East Bridgewater/Spellman Gymnastics team placed 4th at the MIAA South Sectionals tournament, qualifying the team for States. This marks the first time in the program's history that the team advanced to the States tournament, where the top 8 teams from Massachusetts competed on March 2nd at Algonquin Regional High School.

Following the State tournament, Viking Sports Parents shared the thrilling news: "Our gymnastics team will compete in the New Englands for the first time in history! Congrats, girls!"
Congratulations to the team for all your hard work and historical achievements. Good luck at the New Englands! Another thank you to the sponsors, Bluestone Bank and Mass Cultural Council.

Historical Tidbit:
Sachem Rock Farm
The Sachem Rock Farm property, spanning over 31 acres along the Satucket River, has been an agricultural site with a rich history. Previously owned by numerous East Bridgewater families over the centuries, it was an important site for the Wampanoags before that. The farm's prominent rock, a high point on the property, was chosen by Chief Massasoit as the meeting place with representatives of the Duxbury Colony in 1649 to agree on the settlement of the Bridgewaters.

From the 1660s, the Latham family owned and maintained the property for four generations, beginning with settler Robert Latham and concluding after the start of the 1800s. The Lathams played a significant role in shaping the economic history of East Bridgewater. In the 19th century, Thomas and Abbott Hewitt acquired the farm, transforming it into one of the most affluent and productive agricultural sites of their time. In the 20th century, the Moorhouse family turned the farm into a country estate. Finally, from the 1960s until the 1990s, Doctor Bannerman lived and saw patients there.

Today, the Center at Sachem Rock, a Senior & Community Center built in 2012, is situated on the Sachem Rock Farm property. The Town of East Bridgewater renovated and expanded the house, incorporating architectural features from the barn to create meeting rooms for town activities.

Climate Can Do: Recycling Household Scraps Through Composting

Thinking about starting to create your own compost? Composting is simple, and can be done right in your own back yard in a designated space or box.

Composting is a controlled, aerobic (oxygen-required) process that converts organic materials into a nutrient-rich soil amendment or mulch through natural decomposition. Microorganisms feed on the materials added to the compost pile, breaking it down into core materials.

Materials you add are "greens" and "browns." Greens provide nitrogen, and can include fresh grass clippings, food scraps, and coffee grounds. Browns provide carbon and act as a food source. Typical browns you can add include dead leaves, branches, twigs, and paper.

Benefits to Composting

  • Improves the structure and health of your soil by adding organic matter.
  • Helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients.
  • Attracts beneficial organisms to the soil and reduces the need for pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Reduces the potential for soil erosion.
  • Sequesters carbon in the soil.
  • Builds resiliency to the impacts of climate change.

Aerating occasionally helps the process. Without oxygen a compost pile is ready in 6 months to a year. With oxygen added in just a few months, add compost to your flower and vegetable beds, window boxes, and container gardens; incorporate it into tree beds; mix it with potting soil for indoor plants for a nutrient rich soil.
