This weekend I finally scratched that itch: I got out into the garden to tend to the plants that needed a little extra TLC. But there it was again—my pear tree showing those dreaded rust spots that have plagued it for years. The rose bushes weren’t spared either, with their own black spots to worry about.
I reached for my "Picture This" app, hoping to get answers, when it hit me: I was being reactive. In an age where we don’t have to be, why wait until there’s a problem? Why not get ahead of it?
The answer, of course, is AI. But first, I had to get my own house—or rather, garden—in order. I went back to the plant log I started in 2014 (yes, 11 years ago) and realized it was missing nearly half my plants. So, I inventoried my entire yard, front, back, and sides, capturing names, locations, dates, and notes on why each plant was chosen.
Then came the magic: I asked AI to help me fill in the blanks—genus, species, care instructions. I ended up with a binder full of knowledge, sorted by location, complete with photos and notes. But I didn’t stop there. I realized I could use AI to build a month-by-month run book: when to prune, fertilize, deadhead, or even bring plants inside for the winter.
Suddenly, I had a plan—a proactive, organized approach to keeping my garden healthy. Two weeks’ lead time to order sprays? Check. Calendar reminders? Check.
It’s true what they say: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of pain.” AI made it genius. Or should I say GenAI?
Pure genius—had to share!
