Prepare for Winter Weather

When winter weather is in the forecast, citizens are urged to tune in to official information sources for the latest advisories and updates, as conditions may change rapidly. Updates will be posted by Calvert County Government on Facebook and on the county website at www.CalvertCountyMd.gov.

Download the Calvert Prepare mobile app for push notifications, emergency plans and more, and visit www.CalvertCountyMd.gov/BeAwarePrepare for more tools to help you stay informed and ready. Be sure to check your winter storm emergency kit at home and in your car, and ensure you are prepared in case severe weather strikes.

Use extra caution this weekend, as roadways may be slick.

Slow down, stay alert and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Bridges are especially susceptible to freezing and freeze faster than roads. If you are crossing a bridge, reduce your speed before you reach it.

Extreme cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia, a dangerous condition that can occur when your body temperature drops too low. Certain individuals, including the elderly and young children, are more vulnerable. Please be aware of the signs and symptoms of hypothermia, and if you suspect someone is affected, take immediate action.

Power Outages

Due to forecasted winter weather, there is a potential for power outages to occur. To officially report outages or downed power lines:

  • SMECO customers: Call SMECO’s Outage Hotline at 877-74-SMECO (877-747-6326), download the “SMECO 24/7” mobile app, use SMECO’s text messaging service, or report the outage online. Report downed power lines immediately by calling 888-440-3311.

  • BGE customers: Call 877-778-2222, using the BGE mobile app, text “OUT” to MYBGE (69243), or online at www.bge.com/Outages/ReportAnOutage. BGE asks all customers, including those with smart meters, to report their outage.

If you spot a downed power line, consider it energized and dangerous.

Please stay safe and prepared this weekend. Keep an emergency kit in your car, ensure you have sufficient heating supplies and stay updated on weather forecasts. Your safety is our top priority.
