Z end of the Ladder

As the year winds down and many of us are mentally signing off, I came across something of impact. I came across a video today that stopped me cold...not because it was provocative, but because it was accurate.

The creator articulated something many people are feeling but haven’t fully named yet: the way we’ve been taught to work no longer aligns with the reality we’re living in. The promises that hard work, loyalty, and endurance would lead to stability and security simply don’t hold the way they once did.

I agree with everything she said.

I’m Gen X. We didn’t opt out of the system , we stayed in it. We climbed the ladder. We absorbed responsibility. We carried teams, functions, and organizations through years of change, often at personal cost. We believed that perseverance would eventually be rewarded.

For many of us, it wasn’t.

What I see now, week after week, is the aftermath. Peers being laid off. Some taking roles at significantly lower pay just to retain benefits. Others pivoting into consulting or advisory work later than they ever expected, trying to reassemble stability from fragments of experience and reputation. Not because they failed, but because the system quietly moved the goalposts.

The ladder didn’t collapse overnight.

It eroded slowly, until one day it simply wasn’t there.

Millennials and Gen Z see this clearly. They are not climbing ladders, they’re hopping lily pads. They move roles, companies, and industries with intention, prioritizing learning, optionality, and self-advocacy over tenure. That’s not a lack of commitment. It’s adaptation to an environment that no longer rewards loyalty in predictable ways.

When systems stop protecting people, people stop protecting systems.

The real work today isn’t blind allegiance or nonstop hustle. It’s discernment. Evaluating options early and often. Learning continuously. Building skills that travel with you. Advocating for yourself before someone else makes the decision for you.

This isn’t about working less.

It’s about working awake.

And here’s where I sit, holding both truths.

I understand the generation that stayed and paid the price.

And I understand the generations that refuse to repeat that cycle.

My work lives in that space, helping people make sense of where they are, what the landscape actually looks like now, and how to design a path that fits their world, not someone else’s outdated model.

If you’re questioning your relationship with work… If you’re navigating a pivot, an exit, or a redefinition…If you’re trying to decide what’s worth investing your time and energy into next…

That’s the conversation I coach.

Because the goal isn’t to escape work altogether.

It’s to build a way of working that doesn’t cost you your health, your identity, or your future.

If the game has changed, the smartest move is learning how to play it differently, on your own terms.

How about you, where do you stand in your career? Tell me all about it, or better yet, let's brainstorm on ways to redefine your future and map the course that makes the most sense for you!

TIP of the Week

Framing the Reframe

As the year winds down, skip the resolutions and reframe instead.

Ask yourself 3 questions:

1) What should I stop doing?

2) What should I continue doing?

3) What should I start doing?

You don’t need to climb the whole ladder. Just make the next smart move. The next pad may be closer than you think.

Blue Ink

There is real science behind writing things down by hand, especially in blue ink. Studies show that handwriting improves memory, focus, and comprehension because it engages multiple parts of the brain at once. Using color adds contrast, helping the brain encode information more effectively.

In a world of constant noise and speed, sometimes clarity comes from slowing down, picking up a pen, and letting your thoughts land on paper.

That's why, this year, whether making new resolutions, naming a theme, or just making a "must do" list, write it down, somewhere...and try blue ink! I know I will. ;)

Closing in on Closure

This time of year always pulls me toward closure.

It’s when I look back at the goals I set, the theme I named for the year, and I actually sit with the questions that matter. What did I get done? Was I disciplined when it counted? Did I show up when I needed to? And just as important...did I put my own mask on first?

It’s also when I get very practical. I pull up my budget worksheet and reassess monthly spend. What subscriptions still make sense? Which ones quietly outlived their usefulness? Do I really need this one, or did it just become background noise?

And then there’s the list. Yes, that list. The one that never fully goes away. Touching up the paint on the front door. Regrouting the bathroom shower. Checking the batteries in every smoke detector. Small things. Manageable things. Yet somehow, they linger.

By the time we reach 12/31, I make a point to bring that list to closure. Not perfectly, but intentionally. And every year, without fail, I feel the same thing: peace.

There’s something powerful about closure. It lightens you. It clears mental space. It quiets the low-level noise that keeps tapping at your attention.

The fastest way to get there is simple: stop procrastinating and make today the day to DIA, do it anyway.

The list won’t finish itself. And those ankle-biter tasks keep chiseling away at your peace if you let them. As the list gets crossed off, I feel lighter too.

There’s nothing quite like starting a new year with a blank slate, not because everything is perfect, but because you chose to close the loops that mattered.

What's something you do by end of the year? Tell me about it!
