Learn through the 5 Senses with The Basics! | | |
Encourage your child to notice what they see, hear, smell, touch, and taste. Take a walk in a local park and talk about the changing colors, listen to birds or rustling leaves, feel tree bark and other textures, smell the autumn air, and taste a favorite healthy snack.
Having everyday conversations about the senes helps build language, curiosity, and strong connections.
| | | | | This month's top tip, inspired by The Basics principle "Count, Group, and Compare," is to take your child to a tree-filled park or path where they can collect colorful fallen leaves. Talk about the autumn colors and ask your child to sort leaves by color, shape or size. | | More ways to explore the 5 senses using The Basics principles: | | | |
Maximize Love, Manage Stress
Show your child what it means to be gentle as they play with stuffed animals. Encourage them to use soft hands, give gentle hugs, and practice how to carefully pet an animal.
| | | |
Talk, Sing, and Point
Music is a wonderful way to help your child feel calm and connected before bedtime or at the start of the day. Playing a favorite song together can help reduce stress and create a special moment to enjoy.
| | | |
Explore Through Movement and Play
Get your child involved in preparing a meal or snack together. Try baking fall cookies or making a favorite recipe and talk about the delicious smells you notice.
| | | |
Read and Discuss Stories
Seek out age-appropriate books about fall and the changing seasons that you and your child can read at bedtime or on rainy days.

Childcare Providers & Famlies: Your Voice Matters!
A message from Early Childhood Services to Educators, Families, and Community Members:
Montgomery County has proposed changes to the Working Parents Assistance Program, and the public is invited to comment.
| | |
What is proposed: The proposed regulation would update the program's eligibility criteria and operations to modernize how the program works. If adopted, it would supersede the existing regulation.
Why it matters: This program affects how working families in our community access child care. The perspectives of parents, child care providers, and educators help shape regulations that work in practice, and your experience is valuable.
How to participate: Review the proposed regulation and instructions in the October 2026 Montgomery County Register: Montgomery County Executive Regulation
Submit your written comments by November 5, 2026, to Leslie Frey, Intergovernmental Relations Legislative Analyst, Department of Health and Human Services, 401 Hungerford Dr, Rockville Maryland, 20850; or email Leslie.Frey@montgomerycountymd.gov.
