AP Seminar & AP Research in Texas

There are two important updates concerning AP Seminar and AP Research in Texas, effective this 2025-2026 school year. Review the information below provided by the College Board.

  1. The price for AP Seminar and AP Research exams will be the same as other AP Exams, $99.
  2. The process for offering AP Capstone courses (AP Seminar and AP Research) in Texas is changing to provide districts with greater flexibility. Districts should now use existing state-approved course codes that align with the intended credit designation for AP Seminar and AP Research.

Here’s How This Works:

Schools that want to offer AP Seminar or AP Research as an elective in any subject area should follow these steps:

  • Select the appropriate Special Topics or Independent Study course code. See chart below.
  • Customize the course title in your SIS. (Use the official course code in SIS and PEIMS; the local transcript can reflect a custom course title.)
  • Mark the course as AP using the "P" AP Explanation Code in TREx.

If schools want to integrate the AP Seminar framework into their English II classrooms, they must ensure that all English II TEKS content requirements are taught in full. These content requirements are outlined in TAC §110.37, English Language Arts and Reading, English II. This ensures alignment with the state-mandated curriculum standards. Students must take the English II EOC as mandated by 19 TAC §101.3021.

Schools must use the English II course code in PEIMS and their SIS to ensure students meet graduation requirements. Independent Studies and Special Topics codes cannot substitute for the English II code.

Schools that want to offer AP Seminar to meet graduation requirements for English II should follow these steps:

  • Use the English II course code (TAC §110.37) in PEIMS to award credit.
  • Select the appropriate Special Topics course code, for example: Independent Study in English (TAC §110.46).
  • Customize the course title in your SIS. (Use the official course code in SIS and PEIMS; the local transcript can reflect a custom course title such as “AP Seminar”.)
  • Mark the course as AP using the "P" AP Explanation Code in TREx.
  • Stack both course codes in PEIMS.
Special Topics in Social Studies 113.47 Chapter 113. Social Studies Research Methods 113.48 Chapter 113. Social Studies Advanced Studies 113.60 Chapter 113. Independent Study in English 110.46 Chapter 110. Independent Study in Mathematics 111.45 Chapter 111. Specialized Topics in Science 112.51 Chapter 112.
