You’re navigating life alone. You’re the person learning new software from someone half your age. You have to start introducing yourself without the role or title as back up or verification you may have carried for decades.
AI is simply the latest identity earthquake. No matter what the doomsmiths say, sometimes the problem isn’t AI, it’s our attachment to how or who we thought life would be. Life rarely asks our permission as to whether we want to evolve into new identities. It kind of nudge-bombs us into it.
Divorce, redundancy, loss, illness, retirement, heartache – life has a way of deciding you need a reboot and reinvention whether you ordered it or not. Ouch, that hurts!
Who am I now?
Retirement is the challenge of defining who you are without work/position/status to define you. You don’t just lose a partner you lose the future you had planned and the shared story of who you were together. When you have been ill recovery is often less about becoming who you were and more about making peace with who you've become.
When the career ladder has become a professional climbing wall it can shake the sense of self.
The Big Question
Maybe the question isn’t: “How do I keep being the person I’ve always been?”
But “Who gets to emerge when that version of me is no longer required?” It’s scary but it’s where growth grows.
Thing is, we all have trod this path before and here we are still standing, We rebuild identities, we are more resilient than we think and change isn’t always bad. Know this, we all feel unqualified for our next chapter but somehow we always “get there”.
