(Re)Balancing
"When rowing in turbulent waters, don’t try to get your boat straight; get YOURSELF straight, and that will keep the boat in balance.”

So much has changed in the ways how we work and how we spend our “free time” in the past year. For many of us, home office and home-schooling have made it more challenging to separate work and (family) life. For some, the crisis has also brought the need to take on even more work in order to be able to pay the bills.

And yet: hosting ourselves, taking care of our own needs is a vital part of (re-)balancing.

And for some of us it’s not just about a balance between work and life - it can be balancing the different parts of our life - self-care, care for children & family, the needs of our community. And it’s not only about time - it’s also about space. What is the new space you are navigating now?

For some it might be finding a balance for the first time, for others, it may be finding your way back to balance. In our February Community Cafe on this theme, we explored both and everything in between, as captured in this graphic recording by the wonderful Viola Tschendel Clark. It was deeply touching and wonderful to be in this inquiry together, as a global community.

As this is an ongoing inquiry, we invite all of us to take time to dig a little deeper into our own balancing acts and to learn from others how they (re-)find their balance.

PS: Big thanks to Anne-Claire Frank-Seisay for sharing her rowing experience to start us off and the fantastic quote.

The Role of Art in Pivotal Moments
March 17th
HOLD THE DATE for this very special World Cafe Live! ...

We're really excited about this community event, which will be co-hosted by new World Cafe hosts Jenessa Hansen-Evans and Mindy London.

Jenessa and Mindy are both recent graduates of two different World Cafe Hosting Fundamentals learning programs - Jenessa from the 2020 Fall Semester course we offer in partnership with Fielding Graduate University and Mindy from the St Pete Community training, completed last November.

This World Cafe Live! came together because of their shared passion for art, and their vocations - Jenessa works at the Boise City Department of Arts & History and Mindy serves as a docent at several museums. As new subscribers to the Community Table, they've stepped up to the challenge and opportunity of co-hosting a World Cafe Live! for others in the international community around this topic that is so crucial to them and many of the rest of us alike.

The thought-provoking creative conversation they are inviting us into is focused on how the arts impact all of us, all the time, while at the same time contributing to our understanding and experience of specific times throughout history. At this moment, the arts give us particularly valuable windows into the multiple realities of life in today's world, including a scenario where the arts are both threatened - by museum closures, fund-cutting measures and the resulting economic challenges for creatives and create communites across the globe - and experiencing a kind of renaissance.

The Black Lives Matter movement, for example, is a beacon, using public art to amplify cultural perspectives and voices that may not have been heard so clearly before, as black lives (and deaths) are illuminated in full colour - on the streets, in new films, books, music and video. The global pandemic, too, is pushing new art forms to the fore and spawning a richly creative public discourse about health, health workers, the economy, and social transformation.
