HAMPTON ROADS CLOSURES ON WATER CROSSINGS, INTERSTATES AND OTHER NOTABLE DETOURS

For the week of March 16-22

NOTE: This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges.


*Scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.*

Bridges and Tunnels: 


Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Westbound March 17-18
  • Eastbound March 19-20


Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664:

  • Mobile, alternating, single-lane closures northbound March 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.


James River Bridge, Route 17:

  • Single-lane closures southbound March 18-21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.


Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels):

  • Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164). 


HRBT Expansion Project: 

I-64, Gap Widening Segment C, James City County:

  • Single-lane closures on I-64 west from Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) to the New Kent/James City County line March 16-20 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 east from the New Kent/James City County line to Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) March 16-22 from as early as 7 p.m. to as late as 9 a.m. 
  • Full closure of I-64 west on- and off-ramps at Old Stage Road (exit 227) March 16-20 from as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Long-term, temporary traffic shift on I-64 east between the New Kent/James City County line to Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234). View the full traffic alert.


I-64, Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL): 

I-64, HREL Hampton 4C Project:

  • Full off-ramp closures from I-64 east to Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) March 16-20 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.  
  • Full on-ramp closure from Mallory Street to I-64 west March 16 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Alternating, single-lane closures on I-64 west between Mallory Street (exit 268) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265) March 16-20 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Single-lane closures on I-64 east between the Hampton River bridge and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel March 16-20 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Brief, intermittent stoppages on I-64 in both directions between LaSalle Avenue (exit 265) and the Hampton River bridge March 17-21 between 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m. 
  • Long-term, temporary traffic shift with new stop sign on I-64 west off-ramp at Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue (exit 265B) and lane reduction on North Armistead Avenue at Thomas Street. View the full traffic alert.

  • Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between Granby Street (exit 276) and Chesapeake Boulevard (exit 278) consecutively from 7 p.m. March 14 to 5 a.m. March 17, and from 7 p.m. March 21 to 5 a.m. March 24 
  • Full off-ramp closures from I-64 east to Tidewater Drive (exit 277A) March 16-17 from as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Alternating single-lane closures on I-564 from I-64 to Terminal Boulevard March 16-22:
  • Eastbound from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. 
  • Westbound from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. 
  • Full on-ramp closures from Little Creek Road to I-64 east March 16-22 from as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Full ramp closure from I-564 east to I-64 east March 16-19 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Alternating, double-lane closures on I-64 east from Granby Street (exit 276) to Chesapeake Boulevard (exit 278) March 17-20 from as early as 7 p.m. to as late as 5 a.m. 
  • Alternating, double-lane closures on I-64 west from Tidewater Drive (exit 277) to Chesapeake Boulevard (exit 278) March 17-20 from 7 p.m. to as late as 5 a.m. 
  • Full ramp closure from I-64 west to I-564 west March 18-20 from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. 
  • Long-term, temporary traffic shift on I-564 east off-ramp to Little Creek Road (exit 4) and lane reduction on westbound East Admiral Taussig Boulevard. View the full traffic alert.
  • Long-term, temporary full on-ramp closure from northbound Tidewater Drive to I-64 west with detour to next left-turn lane onto on-ramp to I-64 west. View the full traffic alert.

  • Long-term, full ramp closure from Tidewater Drive south to I-64 east, with new left turn at Thole Street to access I-64 east.


I-64, HREL Newport News/Hampton 4A/4B Project:

  • Double-lane closures on I-64 west between Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) and Denbigh Boulevard March 17-20 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Double-lane closures on I-64 east between Clyde Morris Boulevard (exit 258) and Hampton Roads Center Parkway (exit 261) March 19-20 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Double-lane closures on I-64 west between the I-664 interchange (exit 264) and Mercury Boulevard (exit 263) March 19-20 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Long-term outside single lane closures in both directions on LaSalle Avenue from North Armistead Avenue to Michigan Drive starting March 8. View the full traffic alert.

  • Full closure in both directions:
  • Consecutively from 8 p.m. March 14 until 3 a.m. March 17 
  • March 17-20 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. 
  • March 17-21 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 
  • Consecutively from 8 p.m. March 21 until 3 a.m. March 24   


I-64, HREL, Chesapeake:

  • Full closure of Express Lanes: 
  • Eastbound between I-264 (exit 284) and I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) March 17 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.  
  • Westbound between I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) and I-264 (exit 284) March 19 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 


I-64, Chesapeake: 

  • Full off-ramp closure from I-64 east to I-464 north (exit 291A) March 18-21 from as early as 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-264, Virginia Beach: 

  • Full off-ramp closure from I-264 east to Laskin Road/Virginia Beach Boulevard (exit 20) March 16-21 from as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Full on-ramp closure from Laskin Road to I-264 west March 16-20 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
