Langmuir's Wind Lines
“What are those lines of foam you see on a windy lake?” the couple asked. Immediately I was transported to a vista high above a Boundary Waters lake. A stiff breeze tousled the water’s deep blue surface, which was striated with parallel lines of bubbles. The pattern was striking. Then another mental picture replaced that one: the face of my friend Sam, explaining the lines to me more than a decade ago. Unfortunately, that image no longer has a caption. What did Sam say those were called?

Target Weights
Wild animals can expertly camouflage illness or injury. Wild animals can also become underweight or obese. A scale reading is the closest we can come to asking, "how are you feeling today?" so we weigh our raptors daily (or as often as we can) to track their health. But how do we determine their target weight?

Sexing Cicadas
What is a summer day without the roaring symphony of male cicadas seducing potential mates? Anyone visiting our natural play area this past August would likely attest to their powerful presence. In fact, several community members went as far as to collect some of the area's casualties and later, generously donate them for our insect collection. Thankful for the effort put forth in gathering the cicadas, I still have the heavy task of identifying each one.
