New I-70 landing page touted as ‘1-stop shop’ for winter driving info

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has launched a new dedicated “I‑70 Mountain Corridor” landing page — a one-stop hub for winter travel info across Colorado’s busiest mountain interstate.

The page links directly to COTrip.org (and the mobile COTrip Planner App), pre-selecting the I-70 corridor so users can instantly view a map with real-time data: road conditions (icy, slushy, dry), traffic incidents, live snow-plow tracking, weather radar, alerts, and ongoing roadwork.

Travelers can also view roughly 120 traffic cameras from Golden to Vail, check rest areas and scenic byways, and monitor traffic flow via a “traffic speeds” layer that color-codes road segments from smooth (green) to standstill (red).

Beyond maps and cameras, the page offers winter-travel guidance: chain and traction-law reminders, safety checklists (food, water, blankets), tunnel metering updates, public-transit options, and avalanche or closure alerts — all critical for navigating mountain weather and winter hazards.

CDOT encourages frequent I-70 users — especially those heading to ski resorts or mountain communities — to bookmark the page, save their regular routes in COTrip, and sign up for text or email alerts for “Critical,” “Urgent” or “Routine” updates, to stay ahead of changing road conditions.

Improvements along Vail Pass expected to increase safety, shorten closures on I-70 mountain corridor this winter, CDOT says

The latest phase of the I‑70 West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lanes Project has wrapped up major construction ahead of winter — and the upgrades promise safer, smoother travel for mountain motorists. This summer crews demolished the old eastbound bridge near Mile Point 185 and built a new, wider bridge with gentler curves to reduce crash risks.

They also added a third eastbound lane between mile markers 187.3 and 190, giving slower vehicles a climbing lane while freeing up space for faster traffic and first-responders.

New variable message signs at the top of Vail Pass and near the tunnels will now alert drivers more quickly to closures — allowing for faster, better-managed shutdowns when needed.

With crews logging over 90,000 hours and averaging 60 workers daily this season, the project is now on a winter hiatus, with no further lane closures expected until spring 2026.

Once the work is complete, officials foresee as much as a 40% reduction in crashes — and fewer, shorter closures along this notorious stretch of I-70.

Top questions to ask a buyer's agent

When interviewing a buyer’s agent, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they’re the right fit: how long they’ve worked in real estate and whether they’re full- or part-time; how well they know the local market; if you’ll work directly with them or a team; what type of properties they specialize in; and how many recent buyer-side deals they’ve closed. Also ask about their communication style, availability, commission structure, and whether they’ll provide references — and whether they can connect you with trusted inspectors, lenders, contractors or other professionals. A good agent’s transparency and local expertise can make buying a home much easier and more secure.

Fairview Commercial Lending

Why will Real estate outperform in the next cycle

Fairview argues that despite economic uncertainty — from potential mild recessions to “stagflation” or slow growth — real estate stands out as a resilient asset class. The reasoning: during past periods of inflation or economic stagnation, investors gravitated to “hard assets” like real estate, which often held value and outperformed more volatile investments.

That said — according to Fairview — there may be a short-term correction in home prices (down 10–20%) before the cycle swings upward. Also, returns won’t be uniform: success will depend heavily on property type and location.

The firm recommends focusing on segments likely to do well under these conditions: suburban, mid-priced houses (especially rentals near good school districts), light-industrial units (small spaces under ~10,000 sq ft), small office suites (< 3,000 sq ft), and mid-priced multifamily rentals.

On the other hand, Fairview cautions to avoid property types facing more structural headwinds: large urban office buildings (especially in dense city cores), high-end luxury homes, luxury multifamily complexes, and inner-city real estate — all seen as more vulnerable in the coming cycle.

Overall, Fairview concludes that long-term, real estate has the potential to outperform other asset classes — especially for investors who choose their property types wisely and prepare for a likely short-term dip before gains resume.

I am happy because I am grateful. I choose to be grateful. That gratitude allows me to be happy.

November is a true transition month in the mountains. The leaves have fallen, the days grow shorter, and the anticipation of snowfall is in the air. This November has been especially lovely with mild days, crisp nights—and now we’re only days away from more snow. YAY! I love all our seasons for what they each bring, but as an avid skier, winter is what first brought me here… and the beauty of the other seasons is what convinced me to stay. My skis are tuned and ready!

More and more, I’m seeing people discover just how special our summers are, too. Many are spending extended time here or even settling in year-round. The Vail Valley offers incredible variety—scenery, weather, activities, and real estate—across roughly 35 miles and several connecting valleys, all surrounded by national forest. If you’re considering buying, I’d love to show you around and help you understand the nuances between areas. Online browsing is great, but it rarely explains why prices differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. That’s where I come in.

You can start your search at heidibintz.realscout.me, then call me anytime so we can talk through what you’re seeing.

In the meantime, get ready for winter—and think snow!

Whether you’re buying or selling in Colorado or anywhere in the world, I’m your trusted real estate advisor. Reach out anytime, and please stop by when you’re in town—I always love seeing you!

I’m deeply grateful for the wonderful people I’ve met and helped over my 40 years in the Vail Valley—through teaching skiing, my women’s ski clinics, working & owning Kenny’s Double Diamond Ski Shop, and of course through real estate with LIV Sotheby’s. I look forward to continuing to help you and many more for years to come.

Truly,

Heidi
