Note from Bryan
Our text this week is one with many twists and turns, all centered on Jacob and perhaps reflective of his past dealings with his family. We remember Esau, the brother who worked in the fields and tended the flocks. After returning from a hunt, Esau was famished and believed he was dying of hunger, so he traded his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew. Later in Genesis, Jacob once again gains the upper hand by deceiving his father and stealing his brother's blessing. With his mother's help, Jacob convinces his father that he is Esau. In the ancient Near East, Jacob's name was associated with one who takes another's place through cleverness and deception. His mother then sends Jacob to her brother Laban in Haran, where he is to find a wife. It is there that our story begins this Sunday.
Curious Kids:In August we will continue celebrating the role of curiosity in the life of faith with a sermon series based on children’s questions about God, Jesus, faith, and/or the church. We are so thankful for the questions we have received, and excited to address them together. We are now looking for children and youth who would be willing to ask the questions we preach on from the lectern on each of the Sundays between August 2 and September 6. Your curious kid or grandkid does not have to have submitted a question, but if they will be around and want to help us lead worship, please email Pastor Ellen or Pastor Casey.

THE BRITISH ARE COMING—and we hope you are too!!!
. . . To Lunch Bunch on JULY 28th that is. . .
July’s guest speaker at Lunch Bunch will be Ed Niven and, though he is a Redcoat, he is 100% American. In fact, he is a card-carrying member of the Sons of the American Revolution. But, somebody has to be the enemy in all of those reenactments! Ed is considered to be a regional expert on King George’s Army during the Revolution. And he will bring some of his collection of artifacts and memorabilia with him. So come and hear about the life of the British soldier in the 18th century and find out how the Revolution looked from the other side as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday in Davis Hall at 11:45 next Tuesday, July 28.
Children above the age of 8 and accompanied by responsible adults are invited to take part in this special program.
We’ll have a special All-American lunch of hot dogs with mustard, ketchup, some chili and slaw, chips, watermelon and brownies for this special intergenerational event. The cost for this little” indoor cookout” will be $12/person. Reservations are due by noon this Thursday, July 23. Call the Reservation line at 704-788-2100 option 7. Please leave your name, the number of meals needed, and a phone number where you can be reached on the recording. Please feel free to brown bag if this menu does not suit you but we still need to know you are coming but not buying lunch.
Three volunteers for easy set up and clean up would be welcome. Contact Cathy Floyd with questions.
. . . AND, just so you know whose side we are on, we are working on booking the best American patriot we can find to be with us later this year!!

CCM Monthly Food Needs

The pantry is low on many items, most of which are detailed in the section below. Girl Scouts
“Girl Scout Brownie Troop 323 had a paw-sitively amazing time at Great Wolf Lodge on Saturday, July 18 - Sunday, July 19, 2026! Scouts and scout paw-rents enjoyed pizza from Hungry as a Wolf after all our swimming (cause we were hungry like a wolf 🫢)
Scouts and scout paw-rents had fur-real fun at the Summer Camp In-dance party, wolfed down s’mores and then story time in the grand lobby before bed (our own scout Caroline was chosen to help act out the story)!
Scouts and scout paw-rents also practiced wolf howls, learned about water safety, adopted a wolf cub, and of course, more fun and more fun in the waterpark!
Scouts and Scout Paw-rents worked hard to earn their cookie rewards and funds and voted to use part of their earned cookie money to go on this trip and to donate part of their money to the Church of God Children’s Home of North Carolina.
A great big awhooooooooo to our adult volunteers who helped to make this trip possible!”
