Dear Indiana-ACC Colleague,
Indiana-ACC Legislative Day on March 8th
You are cordially invited to join the Indiana-ACC for a special legislative day in Indianapolis to speak with Indiana legislators in a strong, unified voice about the importance of fighting heart disease. Attend a morning workshop and then put your skills to the test when you meet with your state legislators about this year’s policy priorities facing you and your patients. Specifically, this year we will be focusing on healthcare non-compete clauses ( here is a review/analysis that discusses the issue), improving AED access at high school events, and the tobacco tax increase. Building relationships with your state lawmakers will help ensure that the Indiana General Assembly remains aware of your important issues. There is no charge for the event, and appointments with your lawmakers will be made for you. We will also join the Tobacco-Free Indiana Coalition. We will be advocating both for our CV patients as well as our profession. No prior experience is necessary.

Take Action on the Indiana Tobacco Tax
|
|
We have been advocating for a higher tobacco tax for years, and we cannot stop now. Indiana lags behind the nation in policy efforts to reduce tobacco use. The adult smoking rate in Indiana is 17.3 percent, and the high school tobacco use rate is nearly 22.9 percent. A recent report by the American Lung Association shows that tobacco contributes to the deaths of 11,000 Hoosiers per year.
Indiana's tobacco tax is the lowest in the region and hasn't been increased since 2007. We know tobacco tax increases raise much-needed revenue while reducing smoking and those smoking declines also reduce state Medicaid program expenditures.
Take 30 seconds to send a message urging the legislature to support an increase of at least $1 in the tobacco tax -- a win for health and a win for the state budget.
