How Extreme Heat Affects AC Performance

The outdoor condenser is responsible for releasing heat from your home. As outdoor temperatures rise, the condenser has to work harder to reject that heat. Dirty coils, blocked airflow, weak components, or low refrigerant can make the problem worse.

Homes can also gain heat through attics, windows, doors, and poorly sealed areas. South- and west-facing windows, limited attic insulation, and ductwork running through hot attic spaces can all make indoor comfort harder to maintain.

Common Reasons Your AC Runs but Won’t Cool

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow through the cooling system. During heavy summer use, even a partially clogged filter can reduce comfort and make the system work harder. Check your filter monthly and replace it when it looks dirty.

Dirty or Blocked Coils

Evaporator and condenser coils help move heat out of your home. If the coils are dirty or blocked by debris, heat transfer becomes less effective. Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, grass clippings, and other obstructions. If the coils need cleaning, schedule professional maintenance to avoid damaging the equipment.

Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak

Low refrigerant can reduce cooling capacity and may cause ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines. Refrigerant does not get “used up” during normal operation, so low levels usually indicate a leak or another system problem. Refrigerant repairs should be handled by a licensed HVAC technician.

Leaky or Poorly Insulated Ductwork

Leaky ducts can lose cooled air before it reaches your rooms. Ducts in hot attics or unconditioned spaces may also gain heat if they are poorly insulated. A duct inspection can help determine whether leaks, loose connections, or insulation problems are affecting comfort.

Blocked Vents and Returns

Closed or blocked vents can reduce airflow and disrupt system balance. Make sure supply vents and return grilles are open and not covered by furniture, rugs, curtains, or storage.

Closing vents to redirect air may seem helpful, but it can increase pressure in the duct system and reduce performance. If certain rooms are uncomfortable, it is better to have airflow and ductwork evaluated.

Weak Blower Motor

The blower motor pushes cooled air through your ductwork. If the blower is weak or failing, airflow may drop across the home, especially in rooms farthest from the equipment. A technician can test airflow and determine whether the blower or another component is causing the issue.

Thermostat Problems

Thermostat issues can also cause cooling problems. A thermostat with weak batteries, incorrect settings, poor placement, or faulty temperature readings may not control the system properly.

Undersized, Oversized, or Aging AC System

If your AC is too small, it may run constantly and still struggle to cool the home. If it is too large, it may short cycle and fail to remove enough humidity. Older systems may also lose efficiency and need more frequent repairs. A professional load calculation can help determine the right system size if replacement is needed.

Poor Attic Insulation or Air Leaks

Poor insulation and air leaks can let heat into the home and allow cooled air to escape. During extreme heat, these issues can make your AC run longer while comfort still falls short.

What Should You Check Before Calling for AC Repair?

Before requesting professional AC repairs, check the following:

  • Inspect or replace the air filter
  • Make sure vents and returns are open and unblocked
  • Confirm the thermostat is set to cool
  • Avoid setting the thermostat extremely low
  • Clear debris around the outdoor unit
  • Close blinds during peak afternoon sun
  • Look for ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines
  • Listen for unusual noises
  • Check whether the issue happens only during peak heat or throughout the day

If these steps do not improve cooling, the problem may involve refrigerant, airflow, coils, ductwork, electrical components, or system capacity.

When Should You Call an HVAC Professional?

Call for service if your AC blows warm air, the breaker keeps tripping, the system runs constantly, ice forms on the indoor equipment, airflow is weak, or the house never reaches a reasonable temperature. These issues can point to problems that need professional diagnosis.
