AKG Newsworthy NOLA
2023 #7

Good evening my art loving friends.

This gorgeous month of May in New Orleans, I am honored to present a body of work to Peter Max's loyal collectors, work that has been unavailable until now.

As you all know Peter is 85 years old and facing the difficult challenges people face as they age. He does however do the thing most ingrained and about which he was most passionate, paint.

I met Peter in 1988 and we immediately became friends. I hosted 27 exhibitions in my New Orleans gallery since that time. In the late 1990's, Max stopped showing in galleries full time. The exception was the Angela King Gallery.

He sent 50-100 paintings for an annual exhibit and made a personal appearance in New Orleans yearly from 1988 until 2017.

Now I am proud and excited to present a body of 40 works he has just entrusted to us. The paintings are from 2006 on. It's a stellar exhibition.

We have nine paintings to preview to you today. On Friday, May 12, the rest of the exhibit will be presented. Enjoy.

Love, Angela--

PETER MAX EXHIBITION

ONGOING

BIG CHIEF SHAKA ZULU

The opportunity to acquire parts from a deconstructed Black Masking Indian suit is very rare; a privilege and an honor to be able to offer...We have elements of the Egyptology 2017 and 2022 suits and they are spectacular. Please take a look and when you are in New Orleans, definitely come in and see them. They truly are a valued cultural gift Shaka has shared with us.

Big Chief Shaka Zulu is a master of Black Masking suit design, an art form specific to New Orleans, Louisiana, which originated as part of the Indigenous and African culture in the city. The intricate suit-building of the New Orleans Black Masking carnival tradition usually involves sewing and designing for one full year, and are colorfully displayed during Mardi Gras, St. Joseph’s Night, and Super Sunday in New Orleans. In addition to upholding the Black Masking tradition, Zulu is revered as a drummer and stilt dancer, both part of the city’s West African traditions.

CHARLIE THYSELL

In late 2020 we mounted a retrospective of Charlie's work that ranged from the

late 1970's through 2015.

It was incredible to have that beautiful body of work that Charlie and Angela curated together before his death. We are now returning much of the older work to the estate but before we do, we would like to offer you, his loyal collectors, generous considerations on the work going back.

We have created a page with all of the paintings being returned and there will be a 40% reduction on that work.

There are 35 paintings including collaborations with Margarita Sikorskaia.

Please take a look and write us to inquire...

We love Charlie and we love his paintings...We know you do too.

I had one last question...

The Old One told me I could ask but that I already knew the answer.

His words filled me with lightness of being-

Until I felt their weight.

-Thysell

Charlie left his body behind on April 6, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. The lover of life, Charlie had the capacity to embrace his inner child with the same tenderness as his inner demons. You can see it in the innocent lines of a child that he carefully, crafted sometimes delineating the essence of a boogie-man or a tortured soul, as if to say "See there is nothing to be afraid of." As he once said : Learn to play with the dragons who frolic within or be swallowed by the monsters who lurk there.”

Charles Thysell and Angela King have had a long and great relationship in the art world. He began showing with her in 1990 and together they mounted many exhibitions, built many collections and shared his wonderful art with the world.

His work – ranging from still lifes to landscapes to “Heads” – inevitably found its way to museum exhibits and gallery shows. Its warm-hearted, unpretentious style and quiet integrity has won a national following.
