JAZZ CONCERT

On Saturday, October 17 (TOMORROW) at 4:00 p.m., the Fumi Tomita Quartet will present “Yokai! Songs of the Japanese Supernatural”.

Yokai! Songs of the Japanese Supernatural is a unique jazz project by bassist Fumi Tomita featuring songs inspired by Yokai and other supernatural spirits. Yokai are derived from Japanese folklore and come in human, animal, or even inanimate forms, sometimes at the same time! Images of Yokai are often fantastic, bizarre, mysterious, grotesque, sometimes haunting or humorous, and overall, simply wonderful. They prove to be a natural basis for jazz improvisation.

Yokai! is a multimedia experience with images of Yokai and other supernatural beings gracing the screen as the music is being performed. Yokai! is an experience you won’t forget!

This concert is part of Christ Church Cathedral’s

Engaging the Arts initiative.

DEAN SEARCH — UPDATE

Bishop Mello has completed an initial round of candidate interviews and has pared down the pool. He will conduct a second, more extensive round of interviews between now and Diocesan Convention. We will share additional information as it becomes available.

NEW ELECTRONIC DOORS

This past Spring, one of our parishioners made a generous donation to the Cathedral with the request that it be used to make our buildings more accessible to people whose mobility is impaired. At about the same time, a participant in one of the “hopes and dreams for a new Dean” listening sessions spoke of the difficulty she encountered when trying to open the Cathedral’s heavy glass entry doors. Sometimes dreams do come true, especially when they are lifted aloft, and so it is my delight to introduce you to our new electronic door openers which is being demonstrated in the linked video by some of the Cathedral’s most mobile denizens. Enjoy. Harlon +

For the video of the new electronic doors in action, please click here, and then scroll down the front page a bit.

CHURCH BY THE POND

October 10, 2026

As thousands of runners competed in the Hartford Marathon races today (Marathon, Half Marathon, 5k, Wheelchair, Kid’s Fun Run, etc.) my thoughts naturally turned toward Ecclesiastes: I returned and saw under the sun that — The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.

Of the thousands of participants in the various races, whether they were strong runners or not so strong runners, MOST appeared to be enjoying their race. Of course, EVERY Saturday in Bushnell Park we are blessed to experience the company of a disparate congregation in various stages of their race. Our congregants find comfort and reassurance that they are welcome in our company and can, at least momentarily, enjoy where life has brought them.

Today, Father George Roberts, Rector of Saint James Episcopal Church in Farmington, led a flock of 27 in reflection, prayer and communion reminding us that while running 26.2 miles is difficult, it is NOT difficult to let in God’s light and love — especially since said light and love is eternally present and always available.

Afterwards, a stalwart team from Trinity Episcopal Church in Tariffville, who faithfully and doggedly serve our community, generously provided 40 lunches to hungry people.

LAST WEEK AT CCC: SERVICE

October 11, 2026

THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY

AFTER PENTECOST

We are many members, yet one body in Christ.

Somos muchos miembros, pero un solo cuerpo en Cristo.

On the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost, The Rev. Canon Kevin Olds celebrated and preached at our 8:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist. At 10:00 a.m., our Interim Dean, The Rev. Canon Harlon Dalton, presided, and Rev. Canon Kevin Olds preached.

Reflecting on the parable of the wedding banquet, Rev. Canon Olds invited us to look beyond the feast’s details and distractions to recognize God’s unwavering determination to fulfill His divine plan. Although the invitation to the heavenly banquet is extended to all, we are called to prepare ourselves for this sacred encounter. He reminded us that the proper wedding garment represents the good deeds of the saints, reflecting the purity of our hearts, the sincerity of our intentions, and the integrity of our lives before God.

At 9:00 a.m., we gathered for our “30 Minutes with the Preacher” formation session. Later, at 11:30 a.m., our hospitality space welcomed the community for the Hispanic Festival 2026, celebrating our culture, fellowship, and unity as one body in Christ.

CONVERATIONS IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE

You are invited to join us on Monday, October 26 at 9:30 a.m. for Conversations in the Public Square!

What started during the pandemic as a simple way to stay connected to our immediate community has grown into a gathering we look forward to continuing. In a time when connection, collaboration, and mutual support are more important than ever, we’ve found tremendous value in coming together, sharing what we’re working on, and learning how we can show up for one another.

Organized by Hartford Stage and Christ Church Cathedral, Conversations in the Public Square brings together community partners for an informal morning of conversation, connection, and collaboration. Come share what’s happening at your organization, hear what others are up to, and explore where there may be opportunities to support one another.

No formal presentations or polished pitches, just good conversation, new connections, and a chance to be in community with the people and organizations doing meaningful work across our region.

We’re excited to reconnect, hear what you’ve been up to, and see what we might be able to accomplish together. We hope you’ll join us!

Light breakfast bites and coffee will be provided.

New Season of Creation

Daily Devotions

Most of us know very little about the great web of life that surrounds us. Through Oct. 4, the Province One EcoRegion will be offering daily devotions throughout the “Season of Creation” designed to open our eyes to some of the “created ones” with whom we share common ground. These devotions will highlight a different keystone species in our Province One EcoRegion each day, including a photo, a brief description, and thoughts on how the species reflects our image of God followed by a closing prayer. The devotions will be prepared by Episcopalians from around Province One.

Sign up to receive the devotions via the link below.

Camp Washington Community Dinner

On Saturday, November 14, CW will host a community dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Please join us at 5 p.m. for a service of beautiful music, inspiring words, and Holy Communion in the language of the Celtic Christian tradition, led by the Rev. Tuesday Rupp, and accompanied by Pete Miserendino on guitar, our friends from St Paul’s, Woodbury. Contemporary and contemplative, a beautiful offering to God.

Following worship, join us at 6:15 p.m. for dinner — a time of community, conversation, and wonderful food!

Come for worship and stay for dinner, or just come for dinner; your choice. All are welcome!

In lieu of a ticket price for dinner, we welcome your generous donation at the table. All proceeds will go the CW Campership Fund, offering need-based financial assistance to our campers and retreatants.

Gather your family, organize a parish carpool, or extend an invitation to a neighbor and make plans to join us at camp.

Registration is required; please click here to register.
