Student success, retention goal of mathematics professor's calculus videos
|
Dr. Ozkan Ozer, an assistant professor of Mathematics at WKU, has found a simple formula to solve the complex problem of student learning and retention in calculus courses. Preparation plus demonstrations plus recording plus editing equals several hundred videos available at his webpage, YouTube channel and Instagram account: MathByDrOzz.
“If I can help a student see the fun side of calculus, that is a success,” Dr. Ozer said.
Since February 2019, Dr. Ozer has produced more than 700 short Calculus and Differential Equations videos.
Dr. Ozer has been developing his own Wolfram’s Demonstration Projects, in addition to the recently popularized Desmos and Geogebra simulations. With its rules, formulas and derivations, calculus can be overwhelming for some students, he said. “Without simulations it is so dry. Someone should show them the good side of calculus with visuals and make it more fun.”

Like many of you, I have learned to appreciate the small things and, for me, that means cooler evenings and fall colors. I do hope that each of you is finding enjoyment in some of life’s small pleasures. As we continue to navigate these unusual times, I thought I would take to share an update on some of the strategic work that has been happening on our campus. We began this work so long ago that the initial conversations were face-to-face.
Over a year ago, in a continued partnership between the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Enrollment and Student Experience, more than fifty WKU faculty and staff worked together with Ruffalo Noel Levitz to develop a comprehensive multi-year Strategic Enrollment Plan (SEP). The overall purpose of the group is to develop strategies to increase enrollment of qualified students. Six Planning Committees were formed in areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Student Success, Recruitment/Marketing, Financial Assistance, Academic Program Evaluation, and Colonnade. Each developed an action plan that was presented to the SEP Steering Committee. The action plans were designed to provide a narrative that described the intended goals, evaluation metrics, budgets, and enrollment projections.

Dr. Alex Poole didn’t start his college career in a language department. “I wanted to be an economist, but then I figured out that was more of a hobby than a passion.” The Iowa native had always grown up around immigrants. “I was always interested in the sounds of other languages and curious about how people learned languages.
