Landscaping Tips & Tricks September 13, 2024

Let's Learn!

With homeownership comes landscaping responsibilities. We know not everyone is a gardener, but there are some easy things you can do without much skill or knowledge to help keep your yard looking great!

Have questions on the types of plants Emory Crossing prefers? The focus will remain on native plants to Central Texas.

Got Dirt?

We are located in Zone 9a. This was recently update from previously being zoned as 8b. Our soil composition is Blackland Prairie. We are often subjected to 1 to 2-day-a-week irrigation watering allowances. However, hand watering is usually still allowed. So, water those trees and your foundation!

Xeriscaping is limited to 30% in your front yard and 10% in your backyard. Any changes should have an Architectural Review submitted.

To help beautify your yard while also bringing color, consider planting native annuals and perennials like Texas Sage, Texas or Mexican Sage, Salvia, and Lantana.

These plants love the heat and can survive the cold. Salvia and lantana also come in a variety of bloom colors.

Tree Health

Still with me? Great! I have a question for you. Ok, maybe not a question but a cheesy Dad joke.

Q: How do you tell the difference between a Dogwood Tree and an Oak?

A: By it's bark!

Oak Wilt 101

The nitidulid beetle is the critter that helps spread the fungal infection known as oak wilt. They hate the super hot and super cold weather.

It is best to prune between November and March.

Tree Stakes

Tree stakes are only recommended for new trees for 1 to 2 years. Leaving trees staked longer will be more harmful than helpful.

Trees must be able to move with the wind to help strengthen the root system.

How to Plant a Tree

Did you know the tree flare of your tree should be exposed?

Did you also know planting your tree too deep will shorten its lifespan?

Do not "volcano" mulch. Piling mulch up to the trunk will create a haven for critters, as well as, suffocate your tree.

Home Health

East of IH-35 has a soil composition of Blackland Prairie. This soil is clay based, which doesn't allow for water to absorb quickly. Hence, why we tend to flood during heavy storms.

It is suggested that you water your foundation up to 20 minutes a day. A soaker hose is great for this, as it allows a small amount of water to penetrate the ground, versus a sprinkler system which will spray water quickly.

More information

Fire mitigation is important during our brutal Texas summers. While the threat is receding, these basic chores can also have a positive impact on the overall maintenance of your home.

Do your part by cleaning your gutters regularly, and clearing your yard of dead leaves and debris.

If you have a deck, do not store things under it. Store them properly.
