Heather's Blog: Social Gardening

At the end of April, we hosted a pruning workshop at the garden center. The idea to present this workshop came from the Garden Club of Lake Placid, who had hosted us to deliver a presentation on pruning many years ago at one of their monthly meetings. The workshop was a hands on presentation in which we showed the attendees various pruning techniques on some of the most frequently asked about shrubs and the best tools and practices for addressing their pruning needs, and allowed our guests to try to prune the shrubs that we were learning about. Pruning is one of my favorite gardening tasks....

Tulips!

We are the height of our tulip season! Stop by this week for a bouquet before they are gone! Those pesky deer eat tulips growing in our yards, but our tulips are grown in the protection of our greenhouses. They are stunning!

What's New in the Wine & Spirits Shop?

La Grange Tiphaine

I was very fortunate last month to visit two wineries while I was in France visiting my daughter. This month I am highlighting one of the wineries I visited: La Grange Tiphaine, which is located in Amboise--one of the many little towns in the Loire Valley studded with chateaus and vineyards. Ella and I biked through the countryside to their winery which is filled with beautiful outdoor garden sculptures (why is it that everything in France has a touch of beauty?!). Coralie and her husband Damien took over Damien’s father’s vineyards in 2002 and transitioned to organic farming, with the belief that excellent wine starts with excellent soil. La Grange Tiphaine primarily produces Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Cot. One of the loveliest wines they produce is a Chenin Blanc called "Clef de Sol." The label on the bottle has a treble clef on it which is a reference to music--they are both musicians and we had an interesting conversation about the connections between wine and music. But "Clef de Sol" literally means "Key of the Soil" suggesting that the terroir is the key to the wine. If you would like to try this wine we will be pouring it at our tasting on Thursday May 14, and we will be bringing in more wines from La Grange Tiphaine later this Spring and Summer!

East Branch Organics Wine Club!

In April we chose two wines from Austria as our monthly selection, and this month we chose two Spanish wines which you can see in the photo (I'm especially enamored with the red!). Our wine club is a fun and tasty way to learn about wines and try some wines from grape varietals and wine regions you may never have tried (or heard of!) before. We have a limited amount of wines from this month's selections left, so use the link below to learn about the wine club and to subscribe. Feel free to stop by with any questions you may have.

Spring Harvester

Sour Ale w/Apricot, Peach & Mango

Think Spring with this deliciously fruity sour ale!

Little Fluffy Clouds

American Pale Ale

From Prohibition Pig in Vermont--newly available in New York--we have Little Fluffy Clouds Pale Ale. Little Fluffy Clouds is a New England-style pale ale giving off notes of pine, tangerine and white grape with a light, soft, bready mouthfeel.

Grimm Ales

Nothing But Citra

IPA

This single-hop hazy IPA is a pure experience of Citra in all her glory. Few hop varietals offer such a complex and layered profile in a single-hop presentation. Explosive volatile aromatics bring to mind mango, passionfruit, orange, lime, and jasmine.

May Events!

Sun. May 10 11AM-3PM

Sign up for our 4th annual Mother's Day Potting Event! We will help you design and plant your own flower planter. This is a great way to spend some time amongst the flowers with your mother, daughter, friend, or neighbor. It also makes a fantastic Mother's Day gift! The cost is $60 per person for a one-hour time slot. Please call us at 518-0576-9043, stop by the shop to register, or register on line with the link below as attendance is limited.

Wine Tasting w/Leah Rinaldi

Thursday May 14 4:00-6:00

Leah Rinaldi of Jenny & Francois Selections is our expert on everything connected with natural wines. There is an incredible range of wines that can be classified as "natural": some truly taste different from any wine you've tasted before, while others taste just like "classic" wines. Amongst the other wines Leah will be pouring is a gorgeous Chenin Blanc from a winery that I visited in France in April. Stop by, taste some wines, feel free to pepper Leah with any questions you have, and if you find something you like, you will receive a 10% discount.

Wine Tasting

Sat. May 23

3:30-5:30

Join us to taste a selection of wines that we think are just right for spring! We will be pouring lighter reds and mineral driven whites that pair well with light spring fare. Most of these wines are new to the shop, so come on out, try something new, and join the fun! Fingers crossed the weather will cooperate and we will be able to return to outdoor wine tastings!
