Greetings!
A business owner told Henry Braithwaite they'd tried every marketing channel going. Webinars, email, events, digital ads, the lot. Nothing worked.
He didn't offer sympathy. He said he hoped they were wrong.
Because if it's true, if they've genuinely tried everything properly and nothing worked, their business can't scale. And in Henry's experience, when he digs in, they haven't tried anything properly. They've dabbled.
Henry co-founded a marketing agency that grew to 330 staff before he sold it in 2017. He then spent the next fifteen years building Lead Forensics to around 400 staff, close to 50 million in turnover and roughly 5,000 clients across the UK and US. Most people who talk about scaling a business have done it once, under favourable conditions, and would struggle to tell you exactly how. Henry has done it twice and can tell you precisely.
His answer isn't a secret channel or a clever shortcut. It's five unglamorous habits, applied properly, for long enough to compound. Most owners already know what they are. The trouble is they stop doing them once the business starts to work.
Before any of that, there was a student magazine that folded within six months because Henry and his co-founder forgot to sell advertising. At eighteen, with nothing, they took telesales jobs and stayed two and a half years. That stint taught him how to build a playbook and then check whether people were actually following it. You can see that instinct in everything he's built since.
In this conversation, he gets into the oil field test for deciding which marketing channels deserve real money, why measuring quantity without a paired metric always backfires, what actually breaks at 150 employees and again around 20 million, and the hardest call he still finds uncomfortable: working out when someone has been outgrown by their own role.
If you've ever felt you've tried everything and got nowhere, or if you're running a growing team and the internal systems are starting to groan, give it a listen.
