How did you get started in economic development?
As a general contractor and real estate professional in Louisiana during 1988, it became increasingly difficult for my companies to survive the severe downturn in the real estate and construction industries. At the time, Louisiana was struggling with extraordinarily high unemployment. The unemployment rate averaged approximately 10.9% in 1988, compared with 5.5% nationally, leaving roughly 209,000 Louisianians unemployed. It is hard to imagine those circumstances in today’s world.
Much of the economic hardship was driven by weakness in the oil and gas sector. Louisiana was still suffering the effects of the mid-1980s collapse in oil prices, which had severely reduced drilling, exploration, and oil-related employment. The impact was particularly damaging because Louisiana had not yet diversified its economy and remained heavily dependent on the energy industry.
It was during this difficult period that I learned of an opening for an Executive Director of Economic Development in Bossier Parish. Recognizing an opportunity to apply my business experience in a new way, I submitted my application. I was fortunate to be selected to serve as the new Executive Director of the Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation.
That opportunity marked an important turning point in my career, taking me from the challenges of surviving the private-sector downturn into the field of economic development and community leadership.
