A Promising Future is Ahead with Your Generosity: Support the 9/11 National Memorial Trail

As the nation reflects on the recent anniversary of September 11, 2001, the mission of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance remains focused on preserving the memory of those lost and honoring the courage, resilience, and unity that arose from tragedy. The 1,500-mile 9/11 National Memorial Trail, which connects the three hallowed sites—the National September 11 Memorial in New York City, the Pentagon Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania–serves as a living tribute to the events of that day.

Every year, September 11th brings back a flood of emotions for many, including those who lived and worked through the tragic moments. One such individual is John Conrad, who participated in the 2024 9/11 National Memorial Trail tour, cycling the entirety of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. Reflecting on his personal connection to the day, he shared his experience of working in the Department of Defense at the time of tragedy:

"I was on my way to a meeting when we heard on the radio that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. By the time we arrived at our destination, a second plane had hit the other tower and another had crashed into the Pentagon. Going into the meeting with several military personnel who were unaware of the unfolding events, I delivered the sobering news that the Pentagon was now ablaze. Silence and disbelief engulfed the room. Being in the Baltimore/ Washington corridor at the time and unaware of the next target, we were recalled to our primary base.

It was difficult to process what had just happened. So many people were instantly impacted in ways I couldn’t even imagine. When I got to my desk, I had an urgent voicemail from my wife to call home. She had gotten a call from one of our best friends, a call she will never forget. Our friend’s husband had traveled to New York and was working in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. She had no idea about her husband’s fate. My wife went to their house to be with her and help with their kids. Hours passed, and both towers collapsed, with still no word. It was several hours later when the phone finally rang. It was her husband. He had been in the first tower struck, just below the impact. Forty-five minutes later, he was in the street making his way toward New Jersey, where he would eventually receive a cell signal. We were blessed that day, but so many families never got that call. Each year, we remember both the tragedy and the blessing we were given. We will never forget."

Stories like these are a poignant reminder of why the September 11th National Memorial Trail exists. The trail serves as a means to honor the lives lost and the bravery shown that day, offering spaces for reflection and remembrance.

One of the most vital ways to ensure this legacy lives on is by enhancing the visibility of the trail through the installation of signage. Every sign placed along the trail does more than just guide the way—it tells a story to all that travel its length. It reminds those hiking, biking, or walking of the courage shown on that fateful day, the lives lost, and of the resilience that emerged in the aftermath.

As the trail continues to evolve, ensuring its visibility through clear signage remains a critical task. Every mile traveled on the trail depends on the collective support of those who believe in its mission to preserve the memory of September 11, 2001. With your generous support, each marker will stand as a commemorative tribute, ensuring that every mile of this sacred path is filled with purpose and reflection. Visibility is key, and your gift will ensure that the 9/11 National Memorial Trail lives on for generations to come, creating spaces where the memories of 9/11 live on and where the essence of unity continues to inspire all who journey along it. All in the spirit of honoring our nation’s ultimate commitment to Never Forget.

The September 11th National Memorial Trail is a large undertaking and would never be completed or reach its maximum potential without collaborative efforts and partnerships including the National Park Service (NPS). On July 1, 2024, the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance joined the NPS at the Flight 93 National Memorial for a press conference to announce the development of key sections of the trail across three National Parks in Western Pennsylvania: Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, Johnstown Flood National Memorial, and Flight 93 National Memorial. New infrastructure, including bicycle racks, designated bicycle lanes, and 9/11 Trail signage, has been installed to welcome and guide visitors along these significant historical sites.

This achievement strengthens the ongoing partnership between the Alliance and the National Park Service, made possible in part by the Alliance's five-year general agreement with the NPS, which was secured through legislation H.R. 2278, federally designating the September 11th National Memorial Trail route. As we celebrate this milestone, the Alliance aims to fortify its partnership with the National Parks of Western Pennsylvania while also envisioning similar collaboration with additional National Parks traversed by the 9/11 National Memorial Trail in the future.

Building on the momentum of the recent 9/11 anniversary, the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance is eager to amplify the awareness cultivated in 2024. With an unwavering commitment to expanding the 9/11 National Memorial Trail and increasing efforts in community outreach and engagement, in 2025, the Alliance will host compelling events at each of the three 9/11 memorial sites. Each event will serve as a powerful platform to foster community bonds, heighten awareness, and inspire collective remembrance and resilience. Additionally, the organization will be gearing up for an event-filled 2026 as we prepare a 25-event Grand Prix to commemorate the 25-year anniversary of September 11, 2001. Stay tuned for more information regarding events on the 9/11 Trail by checking our events page or connecting with us on social media.

As we move forward, the integration of new signage along the trail is a top priority, which is designed to ensure that every visitor can navigate the trail’s extensive 1,500-mile alignment easily and receive historical context at each significant point of interest. This initiative not only enriches the trail-user experience but also amplifies the trail's visibility, facilitating a deeper connection with the events of September 11, 2001, and promoting a shared sense of remembrance and resilience.

The Alliance sincerely appreciates the continuous support of its community and donors. As we embark on these exciting projects, your contributions are invaluable. Every contribution, large or small, makes an immediate difference. With each sign funded, the trail becomes more accessible and more powerful, ensuring that the legacy of 9/11 is remembered by all who walk its path.
