This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.
This week's archives item reminds us that this church has a long tradition of involving itself with community and activist organizations, and also for being a welcoming place for women.
This is a program from an event that the church, still the First Methodist Church, hosted in March of 1967 for the Canton Sorosis and Junior Sorosis, which were part of the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs. Canton Sorosis was a founding part of the Canton Woman's Club.
This Legislation Day event for women included government officials giving presentations and answering questions, and didn't shy away from having open conversations about such topics as education, welfare and pollution. How different things were in 1967!
Though these were outside groups, there is certainly a parallel between the kinds of things they felt comfortable talking about in our church in 1967 (in the space age!) and our own church group today, Crossroads Community Action, under the able direction of our own Megan Smith.
And our group will have their next meeting after church on Sunday, April 26, and all church members - men and women - are always welcome to be a part of it! (Click to open a PDF in a new window.)
