Data protection and cybercrime: the big risks facing hotels in 2023

By Aaron-Belton

According to recent research from RH-ISAC, investment is increasing significantly to address cybersecurity challenges facing the hospitality sector.
The report reveals a predicted rise in 2023 budgets to cover the implementation of better security systems, expert personnel and staff training. Survey respondents working in hospitality and retail shared a recognition that data protection and digital security are big challenges now facing their sectors and that a knowledge gap needs to be filled – with some speed.
So how can hoteliers ensure their data security is optimized and sensitive financial and guest data is protected, compliant and not at risk of cyber-attacks? What are the key steps all hotels can take to help their teams better understand and manage their information security systems?
Aaron Belton is Head of Global Hospitality at DocMX – a smart technology system for hotels and the hospitality sector that puts the protection of sensitive data at the core of its service. With over 20 years working with hotel professionals and systems worldwide, Aaron shares the context and key steps that all hotels should be taking to optimize data security.

Split 11th Circ. Defers To Justices On Hotel ADA Controversy

Law360 (April 13, 2023, 6:47 PM EDT) -- A divided Eleventh Circuit declined to rehear a Florida suit involving a self-proclaimed tester of Americans with Disabilities Act compliance who said a hotel's online reservation system didn't include booking options for accessible rooms, saying that the Supreme Court already agreed to review a similar case.

In an order written for the majority of the full Eleventh Circuit, U.S. Circuit Court Judge William Pryor said there was no need to reconsider the suit brought by disability-rights advocate Deborah Laufer, who sued Arpan LLC as the operator of Americas Best Value Inn in the northern Florida city of Marianna. The judge said he saw "no point in rehearing this appeal en banc" because the Supreme Court granted certiorari to another of Laufer's cases in March, even though he agreed with a dissenting colleague that a three-judge panel likely wrongly decided that she has standing even though she never intended to book a room.

"I would expect future panels of our court to stay any appeal that presents the same issue, pending the decision of the Supreme Court in Acheson Hotels," the order said, referring to the other case filed by Laufer. "District court judges presented with cases that turn on this threshold issue of justiciability are free to follow our lead and grant a stay too. In situations like this one, we inferior-court judges sometimes judge best by judging least."

Investing in change for the hospitality industry – why technology and a focus on people are the winning formula.

This year’s conference theme for the Future Hospitality Summit Saudi Arabia (FHS) is ‘Invest in Change’, highlighting the importance of the positive change that can be brought forward through the investment in time, intellect and expertise in the hospitality industry to keep up with changing times and trends to better shape the future of the industry. In the lead up to the event we asked a number of industry partners how they are investing in change.
Innovation in any industry is often propelled by two primary forces. One is certainly the evolving habits and preferences of consumers, which themselves tend to be driven by the second factor in this equation of transformation – technology.
Nowhere does this ring true more than in hospitality, an industry impelled forward by monumental leaps in cutting-edge innovation. And nowhere is this more prevalent than in the advent of the cities of the future.
As the pinnacle of a new era in urban development, a cognitive community such as the one being built at NEOM represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for pioneering enterprises and service providers to make their mark on the world stage.
