4:00-5:00 p.m.: Tour (OPTIONAL); 5:30-6:30: Presentation

South Station Tower is an air rights project built above South Station, New England’s largest intermodal station. The 51-story mixed-use building is a 1,000,000 SF addition to the densely traveled transportation hub.

The project includes 711,500 SF of office space, accompanied by 166 condo units and 6,000 SF of ground-floor retail space. The six-level parking structure accommodates parking for approximately 895 cars. The design also features an illuminated crown structure at the top—a prominent feature on the Boston skyline.

Supported by a system of cast-in-place concrete arches and columns at the core, the tower cantilevers out over the existing station and platform to the north and south through a system of transfer trusses at the lowest level and sloped super columns up to level 19.

At level 36, the tower's structural system changes from typical steel framing to cast in place columns and flat slabs for the final floors. This change in structure type and revised column grid is supported by story deep trusses and deep plate girders at level 35/36. Substantial completion is expected in May 2025.

This presentation will focus on the unique structural challenges of design and construction of the tower, including the immense 20-foot-deep pile cap foundation; cast-in-place arches and super columns; temporary support of the cantilevered north and south ends; use of “zipper” trusses at the upper floors; and challenges of constructing such a large-scale structure directly adjacent to a busy transportation hub.

All challenges were successfully overcome due to extensive coordination and cooperation between the Contractor, Engineer, and Owners.  An optional site tour will precede the presentation, with walks around the base of the tower under the arches before heading up to Levels 35 and 36 to observe the transfer trusses and amenity space. TOUR SPACE IS LIMITED to 35 registrants. Once the tour fills, the Presentation-Only option is available.
