Week of September 2-6, 2019
“Schools are not just buildings, curriculum and machines. Schools are relationships and interactions among people.”
Dear Families and Staff:    Thanks to the efforts of so many, we had a fantastic turnout for Open House on Wednesday night. Our 2019-20 school year is off to a great start! It is indeed a privilege and a pleasure to work with you as partners in our children's education. We have such an important role together in preparing our students for their future.
Our opening staff convocation earlier this week, with all of our community partners, spoke clearly that as a school and community, we believe that "our staff goes above and our students go beyond" to ensure the best education possible. We are "one school - one team!"
This year's "Back to School" video will be shared Monday on the district's Facebook page. You can access it at this link. Thank you for being a part of "our village" where we are Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

MEET OFFICER MEDLEN, SOUTHERN DOOR'S NEW SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER
I would like to express my excitement to be with you as your School Resource Officer (SRO). I am a member of the Door County Sheriff’s Office, and have been employed with them since 2003 beginning with the Reserves, Jail, and lastly, the Patrol Division. I am a current member of the Honor Guard team, and have ten prior years’ experience as a SWAT team member. I have many years’ experience as an instructor teaching In-Service training at the Sheriff’s Office; including Emergency Vehicle Operations, Defense and Arrest Tactics, Firearms, Professional Communications, and TASER Conducted Energy Weapon.

I look forward to the opportunity to interact with the students, staff and visitors at Southern Door on a daily basis throughout the upcoming school year. Working together we can all focus on maintaining a safe learning environment for students, staff and visitors.
Please let’s work together for the safety of all and have a great school year. Please feel free to contact me any time with your concerns and questions.

Note: Please go to this link for Greg's full letter that went out to staff and families.
NEWS FROM THE DOOR COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S CRIME PREVENTION FUND

A well-founded School Resource Program is one of the best school security investments a community can make. The return on that investment, however, goes well beyond school security.

The Door County Sheriff’s Office, along with all five of Door County’s school districts, have partnered together to launch a county-wide effort in the Fall of 2019. Collectively, these governmental entities have agreed to share in all of the personnel costs for this program. While the cost of the officers themselves are by far the largest line-item in the program’s budget, there are many other one-time expenses that need to be covered to help launch this county-wide program.

If you would like to help contribute to the Door County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Fund (a fund of the Door County Community Foundation, Inc.), your gift will help cover the one-time expenses that are needed to get the county-wide School Resource Program off the ground.

To make a contribution online, click on this link or you can mail your gift to: Crime Prevention Foundation, c/o Door County Community Foundation, Inc., 222 N. 3rd Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235.
NEW SAFETY & SECURITY PROCEDURES FOR THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR
The safety of our learning environment for all students and staff is our top priority. We know that it is important to you as well. At this link is a letter about some important safety and security procedures that will be in place for visitors entering our facility this year. These changes are part of the district's compliance with the Department of Justice's Office of School Safety requirements. We thank everyone for their support in helping us ensure that a safe learning environment remains our top priority for students and staff.
NEW ELEMENTARY AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
A brand new 21st Century Community Learning Center After School Program will be available for students as a result of a federal grant awarded in June. The program will be offered Monday-Friday at NO COST to all elementary students* in grades K-5, and will run from 3:10-5:30pm. Student registration information is attached at this link .

It will include a variety of enrichment opportunities throughout the course of the school year, including: art, music, physical activity, cooking, health/nutrition, environmental education, project-based learning, math club, service learning, and so much more! In addition to having a safe place to be after school, the program is intended to foster positive relationships, build social-emotional learning skills, provide access to new learning, and support academic outcomes for all students in collaboration with a variety of community partners, including our lead community based organization, the Door County YMCA.

*The program is also open to Southern Door children enrolled in parochial schools, or being home-schooled.

If you are interested in being a part of our 21CCLC program staff, employment information is available at this link.
