Wort der Woche / Word of the Week
Alaaf!

Karneval might be over, but we wanted to sneak in one Karneval related word this week. Alaaf!

Alaaf is a word you would normally hear in Cologne during the Karneval season. Alaaf means “above all else”. It’s usually combined with Kölle to make the phrase Kölle alaaf or “Cologne above all else.” Just don’t get caught saying alaaf in other parts of Germany, as the word helau is the way to go.
