 Prevention of Child Abuse Updates

October is DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Also called intimate partner violence, domestic violence is part of the spectrum of family violence. Many forms of violence can take place under one roof, or in a given community or neighborhood, and can happen at the same time or at different stages of life.

Children who live with domestic violence face increased risks: the risk of exposure to traumatic events, the risk of neglect, the risk of being directly abused, and the risk of losing one or both of their parents. All of these can, and do, lead to negative outcomes for children and affect their well-being, safety, and stability.

Important points to consider are:
  • A majority of studies reveal there are adult and child victims in 60 percent of families experiencing domestic violence.
  • 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
  • Children living in families with domestic violence experience child abuse and neglect at nearly 4 times the rate of families not sharing this experience.
  • Children who experience physical abuse or neglect early in their lives are at greater risk for committing violence against peers (particularly for boys), bullying, teen dating violence, and committing child abuse, elder abuse, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence later in life.

These various forms of violence are interconnected and often share the same root causes. Let’s continue to work through our Exchange Clubs and Exchange Club Centers for the Prevention of Child Abuse to strengthen and build safer families and communities.
