Final Property Tax Reminder:
3rd and final Tax Installment
Payment is due May 31, 2019:

What happens if I missed a payment due date? For any property tax bill where payment is not made timely, the bill is considered delinquent and the remaining balance is subject to interest and penalty. If a payment is missed, the installment plan is no longer available and the balance is due in full. Pursuant to Wisconsin State Statutes and Village of Whitefish Bay Municipal Code, delinquent property tax bills are charged 1.5% interest and penalty per month (in the calculation of interest and penalty, a partial month is considered a full month). Interest and penalty are charged retroactive to February 1, 2019.

Join us today! The community is cordially invited to Whitefish Bay’s 5th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by the Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation. The event is at 11:00 am at Armory Park (Corner of Henry Clay St. and Ardmore Ave.)

This year’s keynote speaker will be Mr. Christopher Miorin, a U.S. Army combat veteran who served as an infantry platoon leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom, executive officer for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, and as an Aide to the President of the United States. Mr. Miorin was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his service and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School.
Your neighbors are working to review housing improvement proposals:
As the housing stock ages in a vibrant community like Whitefish Bay, homeowners often make significant improvements to their property to maintain or increase its value. Some property owners choose to raze older homes and replace them with new ones.

Realizing the delicate and often complicated nature of these projects, Whitefish Bay citizen volunteers are working on behalf of the Village to carefully review each rebuild design at Architectural Review Commission (ARC) meetings.

As the issue gained momentum in recent years, the Village Board formed an Ad Hoc Teardown/Rebuild Committee in late 2017. Consisting of four resident volunteers and two Village Trustees, the committee held five meetings during 2018. Review topics included design guidelines, zoning codes, ARC processes, and specific teardown/rebuild reviews.

After completing its review of the aforementioned topics, the Ad Hoc committee made several recommendations that were adopted by the Village Board in December 2018. Key among those changes were procedures aimed at increasing transparency, improving consistency and providing ARC members with data points to assist them in analyzing the scale and massing of proposed structures. The full list of adopted recommendations is available on the Committee page of the Village website: http://www.wfbvillage.org/343/

The majority of the adopted recommendations took effect in March of this year. Since that time, ARC has reviewed plans for five new homes. In each case, the applicant was required to make changes and attend ARC at least twice to meet the design guidelines prior to receiving final approval.

The Ad Hoc Teardown/Rebuild Committee will reconvene in late August or early September to examine the impact of the adopted recommendations. Stay tuned for the exact meeting date/time along with more updates on the architectural review process and how the teardown/rebuild designs are helping the Village improve its housing stock while balancing the character that makes Whitefish Bay so unique and a highly desirable place to live.

North Shore Health Department:
News from the Health Department:

Did you know? As we (tentatively) approach warmer weather, more of us will be out biking, skateboarding and playing sports. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US in 2015 over 1,000 U.S bicyclists died and there were almost 467,000 bicycle-related injuries. Bicycle helmets reduce the risk of head and brain injuries in the event of a crash. All bicyclists, regardless of age, can help protect themselves by wearing properly fitted bicycle helmets every time they ride.

The North Shore Health Department would like to remind everyone, especially parents, to check the fit of their and their children’s bikes AND helmets. Now is the perfect time to replace helmets if they are too old or too small.  Like car seats, bicycle helmets are only effective for a limited time and if they are involved in a substantial crash should be replaced.

Temperature extremes impact helmets, causing the components to rapidly lose their strength and risk failing after about five years. Note that while many sports require helmets for safe participation, bicycle helmets are not the right helmet for all sports. If you have helmet questions or need help determining if a helmet fits correctly, contact the North Shore Health Department. Our trained staff will assist you and your family with a helmet fitting. We have Bell bike helmets available for $10 if you have it fitted by our staff. Schedule a fitting at either location (Brown Deer or Shorewood) by calling 414-371-2980. Visit the CDC website for bike safety info.
