Now more than ever, people who want to learn a new language are turning to their mobile devices for help as mobile-assisted language learning applications have become increasingly available. Translation Commons is a social-civil society partner of the International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019 (IYIL2019) and invites volunteers to their joint projects.

According to UNESCO around 40 per cent of the estimated 6,700 languages spoken around the world are in danger of disappearing and the fact that most of these are indigenous languages puts the cultures and knowledge systems to which they belong at risk.

To support efforts to protect all indigenous languages Translation Commons has partnered with the IYIL2019 initiative on two major projects.

Toward the end of “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language,” the linguist Gretchen McCulloch acknowledges a paradox at the heart of her book. On the one hand, books about usage tend to enshrine language in a set of rules, and woe to anyone who tries to break them. On the other, the “new rules” floating in the digital ether are constantly changing ; anything tethered to the material world of dead trees can’t possibly keep up.

McCulloch doesn’t have a problem with this. “Rather than thinking of books as a way of embalming language, of rendering it fixed and dead for eternity,” she writes, “we can think of them as maps and guidebooks to help people navigate language’s living, moving splendor.”

Glogowski and the other two women, Maggie Parker and Sarah Bibbey, are part of a larger group of volunteers from Tubac, Green Valley and Patagonia who have been traveling to migrant shelters in Nogales, Sonora once a week for the past two-plus months to teach English classes to the children. Their pupils are part of the wave of families from Central America, South America, Southern Mexico and elsewhere who began arriving in the border city last year in hopes of requesting asylum in the United States.

“We realized that the political asylum-seekers were taking up to three months to enter into the United States, and felt that it was necessary for the kids, and also the adults, to get some kind of education ,” said Francisco “Panchito” Olachea, a paramedic based in Nogales, Sonora who brainstormed the idea with Voices From the Border, a nonprofit organization based in Patagonia.
