Hello Team Northshore,

Wow, how great has it been to be back in school! I know it has been a struggle to get back into a routine for some and I am so grateful for all the efforts of so many these past several weeks as we struggled with the weight of an epic winter storm event. Having said that, it is now time to move forward as we start March in the morning. We will be announcing our snow make-up plans shortly as we work collaboratively to be thoughtful in our deliberation on this topic. “Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. At our recent Board meeting, we celebrated several items of note. One of these items was the opportunity to celebrate the efforts of our middle school principals, counselors, teachers and support staff in completing documentation for our College Bound Scholarship program. Our sign up rate this past year placed us as one of the top performing districts in the state and earned us the Gold Star District Award for the first time. Further, five of our middle schools and Northshore Networks also received Gold Star School status. This is an important milestone for our students in this amazing district and is aligned with Goal 5 and our equity work; “Each student receives equitable access to experiences crucial for success in college and beyond, and meets or exceeds Washington state’s college-&-career readiness graduation requirements.”  This means that qualifying students will have more options and support for future educational goals. Imagine the possibilities…

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, Superintendent Michelle Reid addressed nearly 200 attendees from the Northshore community. District leaders, government officials, community partners, and students were on hand to reflect on Northshore’s history, learn about current initiatives and imagine the possibilities for our District as we focus on excellence, equity and innovation.

Because the focus of our work is students, we were proud to highlight many students from various schools throughout the program! Before the presentation began, two students from Timbercrest and Woodinville provided music while students from the Culinary Arts Program prepared a wonderful breakfast spread. During the presentation, two students from Woodmoor Elementary shared their own “Where I’m From” poems. Then representatives from the student board, along with Superintendent Reid, held an active conversation to give insight into how the District can better serve all students.

Due to the epic snow storm we endured in February, we cancelled school for eight days. Governor Inslee proclaimed a State of Emergency as it was the worst February snow storm since 1923, and so we are able and we have chosen to request a waiver for five of the days. We must still make up the instructional time (number of minutes for these days) and absolutely want to maximize the lost learning time. Having said that, we need to make up the remaining three school days and plan to add these to the end of the current school year calendar.

Northshore School District’s Wall of Honor committee seeks Northshore School District alumni, retirees and volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the Northshore community, state, nation or world. The committee invites the community to submit nominations for Northshore’s Wall of Honor by completing a form detailing information about the nominee, including background information, evidence supporting the nomination, special honors and notable achievements. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 15 at 5:00 p.m.

Annually, the Northshore Wall of Honor recognizes the outstanding achievements of those individuals who built upon the educational foundation they received in the Northshore School District and who have made unique and lasting contributions in their adult lives. Nomination forms and guidelines are available on the Northshore School District Wall of Honor webpage.

Twice a year the Transportation Department completes its emergency evacuation drills with students during the morning drop off at school. 

During this time, buses may be running behind schedule at schools served by the same buses as those earlier schools that completed their drill. We appreciate your patience.

The Northshore School District was presented an incentive rebate in the amount of $420,000 by Snohomish County Public Utility District (SnoPUD) for North Creek High School’s building meeting high energy efficiency markers.

Congratulations to Woodinville High School senior Vivian Balasu and North Creek High School senior Michael Albrecht, who were named semifinalists in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. These students join 18 other Washington state students who have demonstrated leadership and school and community involvement.

The Gold Star Award was granted because 77 percent of eligible Northshore eighth graders signed up for the College Bound program, which is above the state average of 70 percent.

We invite you to join us to learn about and review some of the options being considered regarding boundary adjustments and elementary program placements.  

Programs on the east side of the District that are being considered for placement changes include: EAP, PACE, Dual Language and the Northshore Family Partnership Program. Schools that may be impacted by east side program placement changes include: Wellington, Bear Creek, East Ridge, Sunrise, Cottage Lake and Hollywood Hill. 

Lockwood’s PACE program is also under consideration for placement change.

Following the review of the different options being considered, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a question and answer session with Deputy Superintendent Duggan Harman and Chief Operating Officer Joe Paperman.

Join us for a districtwide kindergarten information night for students entering the 2019-20 school year. Teachers, administrators, and curriculum specialists will present parents with information about the Northshore School District's kindergarten program. The evening is intended for parents only and does not require registration to attend. A livestream of the event will take place with interpreters available in Spanish, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese in the Black Box Theater adjacent to the main auditorium.

Join us Tuesday, March 26 for an evening of spoken-word poetry by Project VOICE poets and performers. Sarah Kay, who visited schools and performed for the Northshore community last year will be returning this year, and will be joined by Phil Kaye. Students, parents and community members across Northshore School District are invited to come connect, reflect and discuss various perspectives and experiences relative to students today.

When major weather prevented students from getting to school, it also prevented many of students from having access to the two nutritious meals that they count on every day. Some families in the District were unable to get to stores and other food sources due to poor road conditions or lack of transportation. To support families, the District launched Northshore Eats to provide hot meals and grab-and-go lunches to Northshore families in need during this challenging time.

The Northshore Schools Foundation's Executive Director, Carmin Dalziel announced at the Jan. 28, 2019 school board meeting that the Foundation had reached a $2 million funding milestone in their mission to support the Northshore School District.

Since 1995, the Northshore Schools Foundation has raised funds and built partnerships to support the educational success and excellence for all Northshore students, teachers and staff. They achieved their first $1 million milestone in March 2014.
